I need some advice pertaining to the installation of a "high performance" stereo in my wagon. I've thought about using 2 Infinity Kappa Subs in a sealed box where the spare tire used to be, running off of a Fosgate amp and a Pioneer "GM special-fit" head. I'd like to know if anyone else has installed the subs and amps in a similar location on a wagon. One requirement I have is that I will not have any boxes floating around in my cargo area. The install has to be visually unnoticable, and allow for the stock operation of the 3rd seat and hauling space.

One of our HOTSS members, Scott Johnson, has his subs mounted in a similar location. I think he used the area opposite of the spare location. Go to the HOTSS website(http://www.hotss.com) and contact him directly. He did the install himself, so he will be able to give you all the dirty details.

the sub choice is a good one as the Kappas require a very reduced airspace and offer a good sound I think that what you are describing should work out fine however the box construction may best be left to a pro as it will require a few tricks to get right i.e. proper airspace and sealing in a confined enviroment

In my 94 wagon, I cut the box off of the
back of the driver side rear compartment and
built a 1.5 cu. ft. box for 2 10" subwoofers.
Then I peeled the carpet off of the compartment door and drilled 2.5" holes all
over it and glued the carpet back on resulting in a grill that looks like the factory compartment door. Stealthy!

Thanks.
I'd thought about doing one on each side, but decided that I'd rather not cut up the driverside trim pieces. How difficult would you expect it to be to build a box for the two 10" subs? I've tried to roughly measure out the space, and it appears that it should work ok. Any tips/tricks I should look into? I'd like to be able to do it myself in order to keep the costs down. I've not got much money to spend, and that which I do have, I'd like to purchase quality components with.

Thanks,
Mike

To build a sealed box for your woofers to fit in the spare tire well you must find out what the air space requirements of your woofers are and build the box acordingly. It will probably require several angles to fit properly. Also, without a free-breathing grill to play through, it may cause the side-panel to buzz or rattle. Make shure your woofers do not require more air space than is physically possible to fit in the well.

I should have no problem with volume. The 10's require .6 ft^3 and the 12's require 1 ft^3. I suspect the mounting and shape of the box will be the difficult parts.
