I just dewooded my RM Wagon. Took approx. 3 1/2 hours to strip off once moldings were removed. The car is white with tan interior, so I painted the de-woodied area with DCM. The guys got to experimenting with what to do with the moldings.

First we were going to sandblast and paint them DCM, but one of the guys decided to play with stripping them. He stripped two layers of vinyl material from them, to find the moldings are all brush finished Stainless Steel. He mounted his buffer in a vice, then proceeded to polish each molding to as shiny of a finish as the large lower moldings, which have already been stripped of the rubber bumper a year ago.

The result is that this is going to look so cool next week when we snap the moldings back on. Very Retro, I believe.

Post some pics of that trim. Mine has a tan paint on the trim under the vinyl. I have thought either strip and paint or polish. I would like to see some pictures though.

Ditto what Klez said I want to see the thin trim without finish. I've been trying to decide whether to powder coat mine or strip it.

- I'm interested too! My trim is in the process of stripping itself right now, following a pattern started by the rubber bumpers on the lower moulding.

I pulled the lower rubber off a year ago and polished the trim. I like it a lot.

In addition to the final results, please take pics of any problem areas as you go. Thanks.

It should be back 3-27-04. I will take pics and email them to someone, since I can't seem to get the things to post.

Its actually aluminum not Steel. I was planning on this too for mine - the only hold up being what to do with the plastic ends on each piece of molding ?????

I've got a couple already stripped and buffed.....for over a year now

I am pretty sure mine were aluminum. Aluminum will oxidize if the conditions are harsh but I would guess that on those covered trim strips it would still be in pretty good shape. Just my guess.

I will check them this weekend. Either way, they are out of the weather for as long as I own the car. Want to at least take it to one Woodward cruise in it's life.

Whatever material they are you will be able to do what you want to do to them.
I nee dto go to Woodward one year too, last year was HR Power Tour, totally worth whatever it costs you to go.

yeah I wondered the same thing about those plastic end caps, so I said forget it and pulled it all off never to be seen again! Glad that you guys are finding ways to keep the wood, I do like the look just didn't want to go through the extra work

I've got a friend who's a machinist - Im trying to twist his arm to machine me the endcaps out of aluminum bar stock.

If successful - and its not a major PITA - would others be interested ??

This is FAR from happening.....but If there is interest I'll pepper him with the idea

Well, stopped at the shop yesterday, and the moldings on my car are all Stainless Steel. The body guy said even wrapped in the vinyl, they would have corroded away if aluminum.

Who can I send some pics to that can post them?

Not finished yet, but getting there. About 6-7 days to totally finish.
