Both of my wagons are "totalled - restored". I was warned that these cars would not be as good as regular used cars. But I sort of like the idea of saving them from a junk yard. The '94 was diamonded just a bit and was easily straightened and has been running great. The '95 drives fine and if it were not for the '94, I would think that it was just right. But the '95 has a front clip that was not done properly. So, I came out way ahead on the '94 and will break even on the '95.
Luckily there were still 15 '95-'96 wagon frames in Lansing. So, I plopped down my $1075 to Dal and it was drop shipped to Dallas Frame. I just dropped off the '95 so that it could get the new "perfect" frame installed. I just hope that they move all the wiring and everything else carefully. They have a reputation for being the best in Dallas, just ask them. ;)

I got the bill from Dal and I was charged $150 to drop-ship the frame from Lansing to my frame shop in Dallas. Pretty good!

Good deal. Mine was about the same cost when you work the exchange. $1038 US My first was freight damaged and I refused it but my second is leaning against the wall for the "one day" project. 6months-3 years , don't matter. Nice to have a brand new one to detail. No rust pits, no scrapes just brand new steel! Regards, Gerry

Lambdapro,

Just how BIG :eek: of a box did the frame come in? Are you planning to document the frame swap with a whole buncha :D pictures? I've always wondered where the best points to support the body during the swap are at. What body mounts have you decided to use? Does the frame feature full boxing, even under the passenger compartment? Or is like the sedan set-up where the passenger compartment is just C-channel?

I am meeting with the Dallas Frame mechanic who is doing the swap on Monday. I'll ask about how it was packed on the truck. ;) I'll also check on boxing and ask how the swap is actually performed.
I wish I had a digital camera!

Well, Monday turned into Wednesday and I went by today. The wagon frame is fully boxed instead of channelled. Looks reasonably stout. The old frame didn't look too bad to me. I'm a bit worried if this is worth it, but I am committed now! Bobby said that he would try to find a micrometer and measure the frame thickness for me.

Estimated that he would start on it Friday and be ready in a week.

Bobby from Dallas Frame told me that they can put any new suspension parts on for no charge while they do the frame swap. I may have waited/thought about this too long. I already had a new centerlink/steering damper, lower control arms, steering knuckles, idler arm.
Here are other parts I am thinking about:
Moog Tie Rods / Inner and outer
ES2020RLT, ES2019RLT
Moog Tie Rod Sleeves
ES2004S
Moog Problem Solver Upper Control Arm Bushings
K6409
total parts is about $130 plus shipping from rockauto. I might have them do an overnight if they are in stock or look for them locally.

What are you doing for the body bushings (complete set of upper & lower cusions) and the bushing bolts? New GM hardware, or the Energy suspension kit? Any idea what the price difference is between the two? Pros and cons?

I have the GM body bushings. They were affordable and made a nice improvement.
I only added the lower and used existing uppers.

I checked with Bobby and he said that my current parts were in very good shape and I did not need to buy new Moog parts for him to swap.

Your are putting new uppers (GM or otherwise) while you have the chance to do them for zero labour I hope. Good shape or not that body has been sitting on them for 7 years! I would really recommend you do them while you have the chance now. I think not doing them would be false economy if you are planning on keeping this car. Regards, Gerry

Just measured the wagon frame thickness - 0.125".
Asked about "body swap". Cost is frame swap plus engine/transmission R&R. Then times 2 for two cars. So cost becomes prohibitive to take it to a shop.

It is finished. The upper body mounts were in good shape with a single exception, which was replaced. I already had GM lowers added last year. The car drives great and gets excellent mileage. It is nice having the locker rear. I have been on gravel and wet patches where I kept traction.
