I'm relatively new here, so I don't know if this has already been answered, but are the 3rd gen(77-90) and 4th gen(91-96) frames the same? I'm asking because I need a new transmission crossmember for my 91 Caprice Wagon.

The 77-90 crossmembers may be the same, but the only ones that are the same as a 91 in the 4th gen are the 91-93 TBI cars.

I know for sure that the sedan frames are not the same, as we just went through this with another member.

I sold him a 94-96 cross-member and it did not fit on his late 70's car. The distance between the frame rails is different.

Also keep in mind that 94-96 has dual exhaust, and this cross-member has two "humps" to clear the exhaust pipes.

The fronts of the frames are the same for the 86-93 cars, and I think they all used the 700R4, so the crossmembers should be the same.

Source?

Not saying you're wrong, but a few of us here on the forum have been curious exactly what year the frame was changed.

The only change in the frames from 86-91 wagons is the rear is wider on the 91. All of the front suspension components from an 86 will fit a 91 except the antilock brake parts. The engine and trans are the same unless it had a TH350 vs. a 700R4/4L60. The frame change took place in 94 when they went to the LT1, and the 4L60E.
