Now my '96 SS is running like crap!

Flushed the transmission, but it seems like it's slipping.

Pulled the Cardone Opti, and it looks fine. Going to get O'Reilly to swap it anyway (it's off...).

What should I look at next?

The 1 o2 sensor on the passenger side is nearly new. The drivers side is an older Bosch. I have the replacement A/C Delco for it.

What's vulnerable?

It did die after going through, but restarted.

Please help!!!

Are you sure your car didn't engulf a bunch of water and then shut off? If it did, you might have to rebuild it or replace it. I don't know if there's a way to check to see if your car sucked in water or not.

Check the oil and Pull the spark plugs for ANY signs of water? If the car is turning over and running, the engine is not "HydroLocked". If any signs of water in the oil.....Change it NOW! Water in any of the cylinders, pul all the plugs out, pull the coil wire off and turn the engine over and clear the cylinders out.
It did...

It shut off.

But...the engine oil looks fine. The transmission fluid looked sketchy, so I flushed it and replaced the filter.

I'm trying to figure out why the engine's running so poorly.

What sensors are low that might be causing that? The PCM is inside (right?), so I don't think it got wet.

I'm surprised how good the inside of the Opti looked...

Thanks,

I think there is a knock sensor mounted fairly low near the water pump. You could try putting some gas line antifreeze in with your gas just in case some got into the fuel system.
20$ says the optical sensor in the opti is gone.

the caps and rotor can dry but the sensor is done!!

buy one from no dubs. or buy a new opti.

thanks
O'Reilly Opti

If there's ANY advantage to an O'Reilly's Opti, it's that you can change it whenever you want. My newest is nearly back on now.

My gas was apparently VERY low, and now it has a fresh full tank of 93. (don't get me started on the odometer lighting circuit, or the expensive fuel level sender...)

I'll update the result of the new Opti shortly...

Tcc?

OK...It seems to be idling fine.

But as soon as I put it in reverse, it rather harshly stalled. When I'd limped it back home earlier, the tranny had been behaving rather poorly.

What would happen to a transmission that had water get into it and got driven ~30 miles? Where would the water have gotten in?

Any other ideas?

How deep was this water?
I don't know...

...2'?

I spoke with my transmission guy. I'm going to try to get it to him tomorrow...
wait so you solved the ignition issue with replacmnt of the opti right?

now you have a trasn issue?
Maybe...

I really don't know how bad the motor was/is. I was sure the Opti was going to be a rust-bucket like the last one I replaced. It was spotless, but the car seems to be idling better. I thought the stalling was going to be the Opti. Now, I'm guessing the Torque Converter solenoid is frozen or something. Plus, it appears to be slipping.

It's a frigging nightmare. I JUST got it running pretty good. When I left the house, it wasn't raining or I would have taken the truck. My truck can drive through a swimming pool. Although, replacing the passenger side o2 sensor solved my poor wet conditions performance.
It shut off.

The PCM is NOT inside. It is under the air filter box behind driver headlight.
What?

Really? Who knew? (well...everybody but me, probably...)

Is it weather/lake protected?

It would be quite a bummer if that was taken out...It has a custom G-Force tune on it...plus more money...

What should I do to mitigate that problem?

The air filter seemed fine/dry upon early inspection.

Where are you located? Maybe someone has a spare PCM you could test out.
Houston

I'm central in Houston.

Could the PCM cause the TCC lockup? If that's the problem. Silly question, I know...

-KP
I have no idea if this is a possibility. Just brainstorming with you.

Could this green plug be wet or gunky and sending a weird/shorted signal?

Yes

Anythings possible at this point...

What is that?

Thanks,

-KP
I have no idea. That's why I have no idea if it could affect anything. It might just be some dumb sensor.

Lots of people here smarter than me that know though, I'm sure.
Did you flush the trans , or just drop the pan and change the filter and top off with 5 qts? If there was any water in the trans fluid, the trans is DONE , water in the fluid ruins the clutchplates, and if there wasn't any water and you had it flushed with a machine, its done also, NEVER flush a trans that has any large amount on miles on it.
