What would you guys recommend to me for a head unit? I am looking to upgrade the one in my Fleetwood. I need one with high power, and 3 sets of preouts, one being a non fade. I have always used Kenwood, and I think I'm leaning towards an excelon D-mask one, but they are pricey.
I was thinking the Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X459. It's got what I want except the D-mask.

For now, I have 5.25 Kenwood Dualmag's in the front doors and stock rears. What I want to do is upgrade the head unit and rear speakers (decent 6x9's) also. I plan to run the interior speakers with the head unit until I make the next move on the system in a year or so. I plan to get a 4ch amp for the interior speakers and a 2ch amp and 2 10's (hence the need for the 3rd pre-out).

What HU would you guys recommend? I need something that'll grow with me, but I don't want to break the bank. And it also has to look good in the dash.

Thanks!

you will most likely want the 1.6 din. they look the best in that opening.i have got an eclipse deck and i really like it. sounds really good. theres alot of good decks out there, a kenwood excelon sounds like a good choice to me. i really don't know what the best head units are, they are basically made with the same parts anyways.

A 1.5 DIN won't fit in my car. I have a double DIN head unit in there now. And nobody makes a dash kit for it either. Grrrr... So it's going to have to be a custom install... I plan to have the deck mounted in the top of the opening and then relocate my traction control switch and add a p/antenna switch underneath it.
Maybe a couple other switches can be added when neccessary. ;)

Contact Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com). They have dash kits for pretty much anything. And they actually have knowledgeable people in customer support

Do a search for this, possibly in the Fleetwood section. I think it was Bill Sadler who said a regular-sized head unit won't fit in the dash without some work. If I remember correctly, most of the guts of the radio are actually in the trunk? He had a solution though.

As for head units, I'd recommend Eclipse, but to each his own. :D

Actually, I've contacted all the major manufacturers of the in dash kits, and no one makes one. :( So it's a custom install. I may be able to adapt one designed for the new blazers to work, but that would still involve some custom fabbing for brackets.

Andrew~ If I were to go through all the trouble of connecting the new head unit to the old wires in the trunk, it would not be beneficial to me. I'd just run all new wires to the speakers and antenna. But thanks for the thought.

I also don't want to go with a double din aftermarket because I have no need for a tape player and the double din's are usually way overpriced and don't have the features that I want.

Thanks!

oops 1.5. i haven't seen the fleetwood interior. i still want one tho. anyways i am surprised that metra doesn't make one. i thought they had one for just about everything else. custom instal is always fun, just take your time, and leave the dash off. maybe get a place to make an aluminum spacer? the kit i have in my car is off set and crooked, so maybe you are better off to do it yourself.

Yeah, I know. :D What I meant was that the "head unit" in the dash isn't as deep as a "regular" one. If I remember correctly. I think Bill said there's air ducting behind the radio, which was why they put most of it in the trunk? My point was that a regular aftermarket wouldn't fit. Maybe I should do a search before I open my moutn...

I have done decks in those Caddy's. Just get your self a nice peice of 12"x12" abs plastic, some black hot melt glue, paper and a ruler. Place the paper over the opening and try to trace it accurately, measure to double check. Then get a nice sharp blade and maybe a dremmel and get creative. If done correctly can look real sweet! The opening in the dash is the same (extremely odd) size as the new cateras and the 90-93 vettes with tape and cd bose systems. I would definately recommend doing either an eq or some switches above or below the radio because if you dont....it kinda looks funny. huge gap above and below and the dash butts right up against the sides of the trim ring of the deck.
