What front end parts would cause me to feel bumps in the road and a little wiggle in steering?

I replaced inner and outer tierods,idler and centerlink(moog),and it did get a whole lot better but still doesnt feel as tight as it use to be.

So what else should I replace to not get the wiggle in my steering when hitting bumps bad roads? (ball joints,control arm)?

Sounds like you have a good start on getting everything firmed up...

R&R of the Tie Tods, Center Link, & Idler arm is a very good start... ALL of the suspension components work together as a whole to affect the feel of your car..

Your Ball Joints COULD have some slop.
Also Very Likely is the Possibility of your Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushings being worn.
You could take care of all of these items by replacing the Bushings & Ball Joints at the same time. If you are going halfway with the dissasembly doing one why not do both..and save yourself the hassle later..


After all the above has been addressed, then that would only leave your Steering Gearbox..there are different schools of thought on this, but depending on your mileage, driving habits & tire size the gearbox will take a bit of wear and translate that back to you..

I replaced all the above Steering Components, Ball Joints & Bushings then replaced my Steering Gearbox with 125k miles on it.. Drastic Improvement and I KNOW I dont have to worrry about any of it for a while.... Just a thought. :D

Just to throw that last link in, wheel bearings. But I'm pretty sure after doing all that other work you would notice that.

How much/time should labor be on these parts?
My mechanic charged me 75.00 to install tie rods,idler,centerlink.

It's hard to say, but for $75 for the work you have had done. It Sounds like you have a Fair Mechanic, I'd stick with him.

Unless you are planning on racing a lot, it's hard to go wrong with the factory bushings... or replacement rubber from Moog or similar.

The PST Polygraphite are nice and don't squeek much and the GW delalum are the cream of the crop... but you'll pay a lot for them.

Rustic pretty much covered it..

I have the Del A Lum's on the Impala and am Going with the Black Polys on the 9c1.. When the time comes I'll do the stock replacements on the Wagon..

What you choose will depend greatly on how you plan to drive the car in the future. If you are looking for a nice tight feel for an everday driver then Stock is Fine, then the Black Poly Bushings and then Del A Lum's in order of perfromance and Cost..


Just keep in mind also that increased performance also, "usually" Translates to increased "Road" Feel.

What should installation be on changing the front control arm bushings be?

I didnt relize how expensive those 4 bushings are.
100.00 from PST.

I did the full poly-graphite front end kit from PST and while it really helped the car (night and day actually), I still had some bumps and the car was still wandering.

I finally replaced the steering shaft (I can't think of the actual name of it right now - I am at work and totally brain dead :rolleyes: ), but it is the shaft that connects the steering column to the steering box. There is a little rag joint/u-joint that was totally worn out. I got the whole kit from Dal for about $150 (if I remember correctly). Between that unit, the ZQ8 bump stops and the Monroe SS shocks that I put in, the car feels incredible! Dal has the upper and lower parts available seperately (for about $100 ea), but the kit has everything, is cheaper, pre-assembled and installed in about 5 minutes! Definitely the way to go!

Check the steering shaft for play and slide the plastic cover away from the rag jount and inspect it. This might be part of your problem. Good luck!

Suspect,
What part are you talking about that installs in 5 minutes?
And what uppers and lowers are you talking about for 100.00 each?

The steering shaft that goes from the steering column to the steering box. It actually has 2 pieces to it. There is an upper shaft that connects to the steering column piece and a lower piece that connects to the steering box. There is a "rag joint" in between these 2 pieces. Dal sells the entire install kit for about $150 and it is a pre-assembled unit with both end pieces and the rag joint.

If you decide to replace this unit, do the following: AIM THE WHEELS STRAIGHT AHEAD AND LOCK THE STEERING COLUMN! DO NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL OR FRONT WHEELS UNTIL THE NEW SHAFT IS IN PLACE!!! There is a sensor of some sort that could get damaged if you do...

Slide plastic cover up the steering shaft to expose lower bolt at steering box. This has a small "hook" on it that wraps around the PS line. There is a bolt near the firewall and another at the steering box. Remove these, slide the shaft up toward the firewall to disengage from the splines on the steering box.

Slide new shaft up in the firewll side and then slide back down over the splined shaft ont he steering box. Tighten bolts, reconnect plastic cover and that is it!!!

I actually did this in my driveway before I left for work one morning. It took no more than 10 minutes.

I can't say that this will fix your problem, but it was the "finishing touch" for my car. Made a huge difference...

Where are you guys getting your Moog parts from. I'm in San Diego,CA so can i get it from the local part store, or do I have to order them online.
