I am planning on doing the whole front end rebuild on my dad's '96 SS in the next couple of weeks. I want to make I have all the tools I need before I dive into this project. I have all your necessary wrenches and sockets, but what about separating the ball joints, springs, shocks, etc.? Thanks for the help!

Well, lets see...
Assorted wrenches, sockets (up to 1/2" drive), pickle fork, spring compressor, ball joint tool, prybars, air tools, an air chisel comes in handy, lots of WD-40, a good jack, grease, grease gun, torque wrench, a BFH, a buddy or two, more WD-40, and a whole heap of patience.

-Search the forum for tips: like the proper torque specs instead of those in the FSM, and removing pivot shaft bolts without damaging their seats, positioning springs, etc.

Be sure you have all the odd parts you need like spring insulators, cotter pins, etc.

Put the pivot shaft shims in marked baggies to get them back in place.

I would emphasize the prybar assortment already suggested. Very helpful in seating the springs for me. I would also get a bunch of hose clamps to use to keep the spring compressed during installation. Really decreases the head ache factor of trying to get the spring in WITH the compressor on it. Also, a trick that worked well for me and I haven't seen posted is to get the LCA correctly seated during reinstallation loosely connect the ball joint to it and then use a 6" or so piece of 1x2 between the LCA bushing and the jack. Get the LCA bushing centered under the frame where it needs to be and then jack up on it using the 1x2 in between. It easily guides it right into position. To get the LCA out the pry bar comes in handy again. HTH
