Driver's side reverse light went out, so I tried to install a new one but found a bunch of yellow goo in the socket (looked like some kind of wax). I put the new bulb in but it did not work, so I checked the passenger side and it too had the stuff in the reverse light socket. I've not seen this before. Is it normal?

Like goldy said, its anti-corrosion grease. My front side markers did not have this in them and it was a PITA to get the bulbs out. Basically had to break the bulb and use needle nose pliers to twist. If you put in new bulbs and they don't work, clean a little bit of the contact off, but leave the rest. It won't hurt at all.

Use dilectric grease. Doesn't dry out like the yellow goop.

You can buy tubes or packets of dielectric grease at Autozone
