Hi There! New owner here and new to the list. I've wanted a big bad B Body for a long time, and finally found and bought the right one for me. I found a 94 Caprice Classic with the following:
LT1, G80, B4U, 2.93 Gears, JA2 Brakes (Disc/Drum), Mint condition leather interior, factory CD player, etc. The paint is white and in perfect condition. (I'm up here in Northwest Washington, where there is no salt or much snow to deal with. Cars last a long time here) I'm really happy with this car, as it will make the perfect platform form my "four door family hotrod". Here's a few questions for you with more experience than I with these cars:
1) Under the hood, on most B Bodies I've seen, there are two electric fans, and you can see the Optispark "out in the open". On mine, there is a regular fan shroud, with a mechanical fan sitting in front of the engine, blocking off the view of the Optispark. It also has an auxiliary electric fan. Why would my car have this? Is this part of a heavy duty cooling package? Is it more cooling capacity than the typical 2 electric fan setup? I must say I'm not a big fan of how it looks. I like seeing the engine "in the clear", without extra paraphernalia on it.
2) The rear end, while equipped with the G80, does have some mighty long legs, which is great for the highway, but I get a little more thrill out of the quick bursts of acceleration afforded to you by a set of 3.73 gears. I know on other GM rear ends, 3.73 gears can only be swapped if the carrier is for 3.42 gears or lower. What about this one - could I swap the 2.93's for 3.73's and still keep the same housing and carrier? Also, how big of a deal is it to swap disc brakes onto this rear end? Would I be better off just to swap a complete Impala SS Rear end onto it? I'd like to avoid the "skinny" 9C1 rear end, as I think it looks funny, although I guess I could fab up some spacers for the rear wheels, if necessary.
Anyways, any help you can offer will be much appreciated.
