... if a Caprice (or Roadmaster) has an LT1 motor? Do I look for a specific range of years? I want to buy one, but want to make sure it has that nice motor. What years do I look for?

Caprices made from 1991-1993 did not have the LT1 they had either a 305 V8 TBI or 350 V8 TBI yielding 170-190 hp.

The 1994-96 Caprice had the LT1 offered in 2 varieties:
9C1 police package with the 5.7 V8--about 285 hp??
L99 cicilian version had a smaller (4.3?) V8--about 200 hp

Hope this helps.

If it's a '94-'96, look for the LT1 code on the SPID label in the trunk. It can be in a 9C1 police package or in a civilian Caprice, as well as all Caprice wagons of those years, and all Buick Roadmasters, both sedan and wagon. From the outside, look for a "P" as the eighth digit of the VIN, and factory dual exhaust.

So as long as I get a 94-96 Caprice (or Roadmaster?) I'll get an LT1?

Not necessarily, remember, all caprices where also available with the L99 (4.3L V8)

Same desing as the LT1, but smaller bore. Like Vin Guy and Booth9c1ss said, look for a "P" as the 8th digit on the VIN. Only way to be sure. Even some 9C1 cars came with the 4.3 V8, usually for city duty.

This isn't entirely true. The smaller 4.3 V8 in the 94-96 cars, while still a Gen 2 small block, is not an LT1, the name for it, as given to it by GM is L99. The motors are basically the same design, just the L99 has a smaller bore and stroke netting it 265 cubic inches over the LT1's 350. It is a HUGE difference when you drive 2 otherwise identical cars with an L99 and an LT1.

To make sure you get an LT1, do as these guys said. It has to be a 94-96 car, the 8th digit in the VIN has to read P, and as long as it still has the original sticker on the underside of the trunk lid, it will read LT1. Also, on the core support, on the emissions sticker, it will say the displacement of the motor, LT1 cars say 5.7.

The other way to tell. When you get into a 94-96 car and put it into gear, if you put the pedal to the floor and the car scares the crap out of you with how fast it is, its an LT1. If it only feels OK, then its an L99 (this is all assuming you haven't driven a huge fast car before, if you have driven a fast car before, it wont really scare you at all as there are a lot of cars faster than out LT1 B-Bodies). If you haven't driven many fast cars though, the power that the LT1 has will probably catch you by surprise, soon enough you'll be used to having it always there and you'll want more though

If you're standing behind it look and see if it has dual exhausts.
