Question

How can I visually tell the difference between a 305 'LT-1' and a 350 LT-1 ??

I'm looking at a car, and its coming with a spare core motor, and I wanted to know what I can do to ID it with the core motor out, so I don't end up with an anchor instead of the right motor (its a 94 9C1 car).

I've dealt with a few LT-1's (bud's 94 Formula), so I have a clue as to what I'm looking at parts-wise.

Thanks,
Wayne

305 is the L03 if i'm not mistaken. LT1s came in 94s,5and6. it has the Homeplate silencer on top. the lil one is the L99 and looks the same. check the VIN. i think W is the LT1 and P?? is the L99. L99 also has one exhuast. if its a 91-93 its the L05 350. similar to the trucks i think. has a square intake ontop the engine. all 91-93 had single exhuast stock. LT1s were the only stock duals.

8th vin digit P is an LT1(350), and the 8th digit W is the L99(262~265 ci??) motor. Those were the two motors available in 94. Visual they appear the same when assembled, maybe something that someone who knows more about could help you with. If the CORE is a short block, you can take a few measures, i.e. of the cylinder bore diameter and see what it is to determine the motors ID. I am not much an expert on this topic, so I hope someone else can chime in....

For the motor that is out of the car take a look behind the drivers side head, in among the cast numbers will be 4.3 or 5.7, I think those numbers are on the side of the block as well.

Hey wayne, good to see another 2GCOG member here.

The LT1 is the 5.7 L engine, and the L99 is the 4.3L. Unfortunately, they are hard to identify because they are pretty much the same looking physically.
You will have to measure up the cylinders and check casting numbers, like already mentioned.
I am assuming you are having trouble identifying a loose block not in the car.
If it was in the car, then it would be fairly simple to identify by looking at the SPID label in the trunk, or simply the VIN. Or by the exhaust setup.
Good luck, this is a great forum to be a part of, with a lot of very useable knowledge for caprices.

Always nice to see a familiar face (or screen name)

Well, the one car I was looking at fell thru, BUT, I went ot a local place that has a bunch of cars here (1-94, 1-95, and 3-96's I was interested in) and I'm sure with some haggling (man, I'm getting good at this), I'm pretty sure I can get it for less. I just wanna make sure I have some money set aside for March when I start school/work and a set of wheels.

Anyhows, some of these have the nice 'police style' hubcaps (the small plastic dog dish with Chevy emblem)....dual exhaust, and a few holes from this and that....except the one I REALLY want - its got a tail spoiler on it.....lol. That one is $3300. Its got like 135K on it, doens't lok too bad for the mileage.

Whatcha think about those ?

ANd the exhaust thing - the LT-1 got the DUAL exhaust, right - not the L05/ L99 right ?

All LT1 b and d-bodies do have dual exhaust. All other b and d-bodies do not.

L03 (305ci) or L05 (350ci) engines were Only installed in 91-93 caprices.

If your looking for a LT1 car you want a 1994-1996 Caprice. The L99 (265ci V8) was the standard engine put in the 94-96 Caprice ONLY. No other car besided the caprice had the L99 engine. The optinal engine in Caprices was a 350ci LT1.

All LT1 cars have dual exhaust. You can tell its its a LT1 by the larger alternator on the engine, The letter in the 8th positon of the vin as stated above and the Dual exhaust.

I would go for a 1995/96 Caprice due to the better/bigger side rear view mirrors. The 1994 mirrors really suck.

Hey Wayne, ypou can email me if you need me to help you shop with some advice.....

96 vehicles have OBDII and pre 96 have OBDI. THere's benefits and drawbacks for each, but all in all not a big deal. Just be sure to get the LT1 (duals). Most important.
Next try to get the G80 rear end (posi). This will be listed on the SPID label on the underside of the trunk lid, along with all the other "RPO" codes.

Try to get a 9C1 caprice (listed on label), it will have a heavy duty frame, heavy duty oil/trans/pow steer coolers, guaranteed.

Also look for rear disc brakes, some caprices still use drums, some don't.

Look for a good rear end gear ratio, most will have a 3.08 rear if a 9C1, but possible 2.93. I am not too sure, but some may have had 3.23 or so, but I believe those were rare. 3.08 will probably be the best you get. Check the SPID label for these codes
GU2=2.73
GW9=2.93
GU4=3.08
GU5=3.23
GU6=3.42
