I found a guy who would build me a NEW 383 stroker minus the install for 4,000.00 or I could go with a used 30,000 (miles)350 chevy small block for 2,700.00,I dont know a thing about either and neither includes install but the 383 stroker sounds like a rocket,I just dont want a car I have to wrench on all the time because of the extra power and strain on the rest of the drive train.and y thoughts?

Pick up a used lt1 for $350.00 or an alum headed lt1 for $650.00.

The aluminum heads are not worth the extra $300. The FL guys are lucky a guy down there bought a bunch of warranty replaced engines, many of which have very minor problems, may have pushed down the junkyard price there. I got a 95 RoadMaster LT1 locally for $550 complete from TB to exhaust manifolds, fuel rail, injectors, etc. and it only had 40K miles. I even had VIN GUY run the vin from the donor car and the 40K the yard told me(car was at a different location) seems reasonable given the info from GM. If you have one shipped that won't be cheap, and if there is an issue(get a 90day warranty for free) it would be a hassle to resolve. I suggest you shop around too since the only other yard near me that had access to a LT1 had an unknown milage(stolen and gutted intertior) SS LT1 for $650 plus a core charge.

So the 383 stroke would be a bit to much?I kinda was leaning toward the 383 for horse and power and was told that the lt1 that came in the caprice ruined trannys and was a project engine from time it was bought till the car got sold.lol.I dont want to get a engine I have to keep investing in.thats why I wanted to go with the NEW 383,but for 4,000.00 I was debating.Or maybe Ide just go with a NEW chevy 350.?any one have any ideas (or pros and cons) of the two engines.

First of all, do you have an LT1 powered car now? Give me some more info and I could help you out. I'm only 50 miles away from GR (Big Rapids) and know some good sources for stuff.

a used 350 small block for $2700, yikes! when it comes to used engines, they can be had for WAY cheaper. 2700 can get you a new crate engine.

you have a '91 correct? if so dont swap to the lt1 because it is WAY too much work. do a search, because its been explained before. its not an easy swap guys.

id say get a L05 engine, work it up a little, then drop it in. thatd be the easiest. lt1 swap is just a nightmare.

can you afford a 4 grand stroker plus the install fees? if so, you can get more with your money. can we say... big block?!

Either way I go I will have to save the $$$ but Im a tattoo artist and money comes quick when I put my mind to it.So 4g's would be off in the distance but so is alot I plan for this car.I currently have a 1991 caprice classic sedan 4 dr. white with a 101006 (miles) 5.0 305 engine, the car has a perfect history through car fax and was driven by a old lady who had it for 3 years and the altinator went after a year and a half, then it sat in her back yard because every place she took it they told her there was a elcetrical problem in the system and it would cost ALOT to fix.and she had all the brakes replaced and exaust done from mannifolds back (single exaust soon to be changed) she had it and I came along and got it for 1,000.00 and it only needed a new altinator.(I replaced the battery too just for sh*ts and giggles).I bought it with 98003 miles on the engine and she got it from a family member who drove it to church and work in lansing. So the car is (to me)well worth the investment,Im not looking for a nice "resale" on this thing I want this to be as nice or nicer than new(defanintly faster!)and thats what my persuits are as of now.I currently have 96 SS swaybars front and rear,SS rear springs (not installed till I get the fronts) new Gabriel preimeum shocks front and rear,(A cheep pair till they prove ready to be replaced) Impala SS grill and lt1 hood badge, and vinal brushed alluminum Caprice SS side scripts (will be put on once I get some nice enough weather.)
And a powndin' A$$ system kenwood mp3 player, subs ,amp, kenwood intierior speakers. And thats about it for right now.But theres ALOT I still want to do with it.I know the LT1 or just plain chevy 350 change over will be a pain,BUT I wont be doing it Ill pay to get that done.Screw that kind of work.I aint that mechanically inclined.lol;but I can do most any thing else.the hole engine thing I think is best left up to those who know what theyre doing and make me pay the price for not knowing it my self.lol...SO theres where Im at.More mods comming soon,Cheap ones that make a diff. too though.Hope fully I can get some pics up once I fix my front end dammage.Any one have a bumper shock(passanger)for sale?Mine is compressed and tore up.speaking of witch should I try to do the body work my self or replace every thing.Who do you guys use to host your pics,(free site preferably)I have my hole hood that needs to be worked on if I try to fix it,mostly the front passanger side corner, and the corner of the fender corner is messed up,but all in all its not that bad.radiator core is still (looking) like its in good shape.so hopefully that wont need to be replaced.

In my opinion:

If you built the stroker, add on tons more money for all the parts your going to have to add on, to take on the extra power (injectors TB, Fuel pump...then theres the tranny issue.... )

If you get the 350, you can spend that 1300 dollars that would get you to your 383 budget on a cam and tons of bolt ons...
