Question

My '92 Caprice doesn't have a trunk light and I want to add one.

I know that Dal part number 10268235 includes a mercury switch, harness from the switch to the bulb, and a new bulb...

Is there a harness back there to supply power? I haven't had the chance to dig around back there quite yet...

Thanks,
Ryan

There should be a clip either attached to or near the sheet metal on the driver's side by the trunk arm hinge. I can't remember if mine was clipped to it or if I clipped it there. Either way, that's where you'll plug the light in.

FYI, the "better" trunk light from '96 is already discontinued from GM but you may be able to find some through the NAISSO.net SuperStore. Good luck, and let me know if they still have some.

After you get the lights (yes, get two of them!), they're very easy to install. You'll find two square holes cut in the underside of the package shelf, one on each side of the trunk. You can run the wires between the package shelf and the sheet metal to keep the trunk clean, too. At the end of the metal where the wires will come out (driver's side), I put a bunch of electrical tape over the rough edge to keep the wires from rubbing through, but wire loom would be better if you can get some.

Somewhere in there you'll need to cut the mercury switch off the second light and splice lengths of wire in to let the second light reach the one that plugs into power.

I didn't find any of the '96 trunk lights through the NAISSO store.

However, it looks like I already have the mercury switch installed - just no light nor harness after the switch! One of the wires has broken off the switch due to flexing when the trunk opens and closes. I'll fix that and run some tests with my multimeter and report back...

If the switch still works, I'll just splice in some regular light bulbs and have a poor man's trunk light. (I have some extra GM bulb harnesses from a spare tail light I had to buy to replace a cracked one)

I just want to make sure that you know that the trunk light is mounted ON THE TRUNK LID on the 92s, not in the trunk. The light is located just to the right of the power trunk release solonoid. It lights up the trunk quite well (until you lean in front of it to get something). I am tempted to get one of this style to augment the dual trunk lights in my trunk.

I don't mean to discourage you from getting the 96 style lights, they're really nice too, but I wanted you to check yours, it might just be burned out.

Hmm, that's interesting to know. Are there cutouts for lights under the package shelf? I had no idea it was different in '92. My '93 has the lights under the package shelf. Learn something new every day!

It's fixed!!!

Turns out that my car did have a trunk light - but someone cut the wire right at the mercury switch and removed the lightbulb and assembly, leaving it hanging down on the left side of the trunk.

After putting a new end on the connector and confirming the switch worked, I put in a 194 bulb and everything worked. I'm concerned that the wires may be a little too short and will strech out of the switch socket after repeated trunk usage, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

The assembly that was in the car was for a single small light under the rear deck -- NOT for the trunk lid itself by the license plate light. I saw cutouts for all 3 locations, but the wiring I have only reached about 6 inches towards the center of the car, from the left trunk hinge.

Now it just has to get dark out so I can see how it really looks. I'll probably add a second light on the other side - but this is good enough for now.
