I've got a 96 white 9c1 (my second car, at age 20) that I'd like to go full impala ss on. Money isn't really much of a problem, but I don't intend to waste it either. Although I probably could have afforded a real SS, this is definitely going to be a lot more fun.

I'm planning on getting started with a paint job. The car is white, and I'd like to go to DGGM. I plan on a TOTAL paint job, in and out.

Hood ornament, spotlight, and side trim is already deleted. I still have 3 roof holes, trunk trim and an antenna hole to fill, and I was thinking of having those done professionally, cuz i really have no clue how to do that right. The front bumper has some large holes where the push bar was, so I was planning on just replacing that outright, since again I have no clue how to repair that. I have no problem at all with making a fool out of myself and getting in WAY over my head, so if anyone knows how to do this (in detail), I would greatly appreciate the advise.

For the actual painting, I am a fairly competant painter, having done several smaller scale jobs to great satisfaction. My plan was to remove the fenders (inner and outer), anything attatched to the firewall, and anything else in the engine bay that gets in my way (but not the engine). With the whole thing dissassembled I can paint the firewall and hard to reach areas up front.

Next I'd strip the interior out completely, with the exception of the basic frame for the dash and such. I will then paint the whole inside in a manner slightly better than half assed (maybe 3/4 assed?). I'll paint the trunk as well, with a little more enthusiasm. Is the underside of the car body color? If so, I can concoct a 2/3 assed way of doing that too.

The simple exterior of the car I will leave to a paint shop, since I suck too much to do that really well (I think). I'm not sure whether or not I'll tackle the doorjambs myself. (suggestions?) Earl Scheib quotes their top quality exterior job, including door jambs and color change at under $1000. The local earl scheib DOES do good work (am I in the twilight zone?).

So thats the plan for phase 1. I won't be adding any SS parts at this point (except maybe the trunk emblem, if the mounting holes are different, anyone confirm?) because it isn't an SS until EVERYTHING else is done. SS trim is the last thing I will do to this car.

So, anyone care to comment on my plan (Or anything else for that matter, i.e. weather, politics, chicks)?

Well you'll have alot of work ahead of ya. I can understand alot of mods to change the appearance of the Caprice. But one I still can't exactly warm up to is erasing the Caprice name and badging. This is not at you Mike. I've seen tons of folks Imp'ing out their Caprice and I think it's a shame to not be proud of the cars true heritage. I've altered my girl a little, but the fat hood ornament and the Caprice badging are staying. She make's me real PROUD!!

Point well taken. I'm not actually sure if I'm gonna actually call it "impala" when its all said and done. I AM sure that I want it to be DGGM, which is why I'm starting with that.

You should really think about what you want first, and you're doing the right thing by posting this thread, and then start.

Personally, I advise against cloning. I too have a 9C1 and went the clone route to a DCM. I liked my car in that color and w/ a tan interior. Soon I realized other Impalas and Caprice owners try to do things that are different and that make their rides stand out as much as possible, w/ good taste of course.
Then I realized I should've gone a different route to begin with, and saved myself the & I spent to clone it.
IMHO, if you can buy an Impala, then buy it, and not clone a 9C1. And if you get a 9C1 w/ the idea of mods, then don't clone it, do something different, yet tastefull. Take ideas from others, but throw in your own ideas too. Shop around, but be willing to spend a few bucks but look for great deals too. I just picked it up from Earl Scheib today and it looks pretty good for a $600, including trunk whole and antena hole covered/shaved. W/ some color sanding it'll be looking even better. I rather spend more $ on performance, and suspension for better control and ride quality, than on paint. But that's just me.

Anyways, give it your own personnal touch instead of cloning, I say.

Thumbs up

Welcome to the club....
Say good bye to you money...

Honestly, your plan is as good as anyone elses on this forum. Just make sure it's what you want. You'll get a lot of advice with a thread like this, so take your time. You might hear an idea you really like.

My advice would be to just drive it for a while the way it is. Make sure everything is working OK.

I wanted to do the Impala thing when I first got my Caprice. Now, one year later, I just LOVE that big chrome grill. I'll never change it.

Something else to think about...When an Impala runs in the high 14s/low 15s people aren't always suprized. But when a Caprice does that, it gets noticed.
(No offense meant, my Impala brothers)

Later,
Bob T.---Thinking Michael Westenhaver is in for a good time!

I just don't see the point of spending all that money to paint the car and install an interior that you can get by buying an SS. If money's not an issue, then why bother? Just buy a 95 or 96 DGGM.

i was gonna do the whole impala cloning myself. i was lucky enough to buy an all black car too. but then i realized, i like the sleeper look. its big black and when it goes it suprises people. like he sed people are surpised to see a caprice run 14 or 15 sec 1/4 miles. caprices are considered old man cars but the lt1 gives it an edge. i like my car how it is but i have a few things i want to change. the wheels are deffinatly stayin on her.

If you want to repaint a different color, paint it your favorite color.

If you want to clone, fine, just put Caprice SS badges on it. I'm always impressed by that.

If I had bought a Caprice (and I came close to doing just that), I'd of put an Impala grill on it, because I like that, and I'd have done something a little wild for a paintjob. I'm not sure what I'd of done for wheels, but I would have went with 17's as they look best.

Well, I'm glad to see all the positive input regarding the ultimate direction I should take. Thanks. In regards to that last comment, the painting is certainly something I want to do. I may not even need to do anything else to have a car that I'm pleased with, but I DO need to paint it DGGM. Anyone have any technical advise on how to proceed?

If you can sand bondo, then you can fix the roof holes yourself. This may not be the correct procedure, but this is how I fixed mine. I removed the headliner (needed to replace anyway) and cut a piece of sheet metal approx. twice the hole size. Mixed up a batch of JB weld and glued the metal to the underside of the hole. No you have sufficient area to spread a thin layer of bondo, sand, and your done. I did this on my HOLE and now that it's painted, it can not be spotted even if you know where to look. No problems for 6 months and I expect it to hold up. Now take that money you saved and have your car painted at anyplace but Earl Schieb!
