Shocks for a 91 - Chevy Impala SS Forum

Son has a 91 Caprice, he wanted me to firm up the ride a little. What shocks do most of you 91 owners use.

I got some Bilstein 1104s and 0929s for it, but the rear shcoks are to short, with them on the car the axle won't drop low enough to change the tire. Will the 1517 rear shock fix this and if it does can I still used the 1104 front shock with the rear 0929.

Fingers got faster than the head, what I meant to said was can I used the 1104 front shocks with the 1517 rear shocks or do I need to go to 1516 in front with 1517 in the rear or do all know a better set up.

Hi,
I don't know a lot about part #'s on shocks but a chain parts store should be able to tell you what you will need from their data base. If you want to firm up the ride, I suggest Monroe or Bilstein Police/Taxi shocks. I had them on my 92 9C1 and they were pretty good. I think the tire-changing problem is just all around with those fender skirts.

Ive never seen a designation for "police" or "taxi" shocks. I went to National Tire and Battery, ( a Sears store), and put on Monroe "performance" gas-matic shocks on my LTZ. The front have a 50/50 valving , while the rear are 60/40. This gives better dampening control as the rear end is lighter and is prone to "hop" on sharp bumps or uneven road surfaces. I can't remember the cost off hand but if I could afford them they couldn't have been too expensive!

According to this article on B-body.net: http://www.b-body.net/Technical/Susp...einShocks.html the 1517 is longer to accomodate the closed fenderwell types.

I have installed Eibach springs and after reading this again I to wonder if the 1104 1517 combination would work well with my setup.

Carl, I've already got the 1104s on the front. Have the 1517s ordered, they should be here the 1st of the week. Will installed them next Saturday if it ain't too cold.

Will let you know how it works. However my case will be somewhat different as I have stock springs right now, am planning on going to SS springs.

Finally got the rear shocks installed. Now have Bilstein 1104s in front and 1517s on the rear. Got rid of the floating ride feeling that I hated, but it still doesn't ride rough. The ride is pretty good right now, stock springs and the Bilsteins. This is on a 91 Caprice.

Would you take $25.00 for those 0929? I think I need new shocks, but dont have the funds to upgrade.
