front springs position

I hate swapping front springs! To make the story short, I am putting Moog 80100 springs on my 1987 Caddy Brougham. So the spring end is just a hair in front of the first drain hole in the pocket of the bottom arm. I know it should be between the two holes but since it's a very stiff spring and it makes me nervous to take it out and put it back in (I did it three times now and it always goes to the same spot). I am also working with my motorcycle helmet on, I'd like to see my baby girl grow up.
Anyways, I think the end of the spring is still in the flat portion. Should I leave it as it is? To me it shouldn't make a big difference but you guys have more experience so maybe you can convince me otherwise, or not! It's a big PITA for me and a bit scary with a floor jack and a spring compressor that I don't trust too much for this stiff springs. Compressing them one inch and the compressor has to take 850 pounds!

One "trick" I've heard is to install a sheet metal screw into the second hole (from underneath),and then butt the spring end against it while installing. Afterwards,simply remove the screw..

Well, what happens in my case is that I cannot compress the spring much. So I install it in the top pocket, but the lower arm is at an angle. I cannot twist the spring being to stiff. And to make it sit in the lower pocket, I need to instert a long bar and whack it in place from a safe distance. It has a slight curve. Only afterwards I am able to compress the lower arm.
I already tried once the remove the lower arm bolts and I really hate it with a soft spring, I don't want to try it with 850 lb-in springs. Even worse when the engine and tranny are not in the car.

I read several times, but unaware what your concern is. Unequal riding ht.? Just measure side-to-side and decide yourself whether re-position is called for. Kinda doubt a few degrees diff means much considering all the variables on the suspension. Otherwise, pretty much a non-starter concern as long as both are perched exactly the same position. As long as they're on the flats, and both installed the same direction coil flat upward.

I rotated a coil a bit once with a sledge smacking a lever made from a prybar and 4 vicegrips on the coil.

EDIT: Based on your last post, you ARE using a coil compressor on that stiff spring aren't you?

Quick internet search is not finding a front spring for this car and the 80100 is a ford 150 spring. Is this right?

96 black may be right if this is a modified spring choice. Some time I read or was told that the holes were also for water drainage.

In the old days you could get spring wedges to raise a car and kits of two little U bolt parts to compress two of the coils to lower the car. If you found the lowering bolt kit you could compress the coil (1 inch?) to make it easier to place on the lower arm. I have done this by compressing the spring out of the car then binding two coils with 2000 Lb aircraft cable in four places. Cut the cable after the bolts were on. I did not like this method but it did work.

I share your hate of spring work. Every time I do it I say it is the last time.

ok second spring is in and knuckle is secured with the nuts. It's at about the same position as the first, just a hair in front of the first hole, where the flat starts.
Time to get a beer!

My concern is that I wasn't sure if the spring can move but I doubt it with that much pressure. And if it moves I belive it can only go towards the second hole. So I'll leave them as they are. Height should be equal and as you said, there are a lot of other variables.

Yes I was using a compressor, same as this:

I didn't want to compress more than 1 inch with that one, I would be scared to use it for over 800 pounds.

It is right, they are F150 springs, in my area they are the cheapest, I just hope the ride won,t be too high.
I had Moog 5552 springs before that I cut, a bit too much ( I estimate them being in the 600 lbs-in area). I found them still a bit soft, maybe they were too low for my Bilsteins to work correctly. That's why I wanted stiffer springs.

And I really do hope (again), that it's the last time I am doing spring work!
