help installing front Bilsteins

Hi, can't get old ones off.
i seem to have a nut on top only, no jam nut.

my ratchet and impact just spin the stem.

i see no place to even get vise grips CLOSE to the shock to stop the spinning.

any ideas...?

The way it's supposed to work is you stick an allen wrench or similar in the top of the threaded rod to keep it from spinning, then use a wrench on the nut. You've got a lot of rust there though, so not sure you'd get the nut off without rounding out the inside. In cases of heavy rust or damaged fasteners, I've removed shocks by just cutting off the top of the rod and the nut with a death wheel or reciprocating saw or whatever I can get in there with. Not sure you'll have room to do that, haven't done shocks on one of these cars yet.

Something witty.

top of shock piston rod will either have a alan head or 2 sides flat. You use a wrench to hold it and a another wrench to remove nut.

Vise grips also work either on top of old shock rod or grab it anywhere on the piston shaft with vice grips and use a socket on the nut

I think i'm SOL.
i tried vise grip on piston shaft and just spins still.
I'll check if i have allen wrench to fit in top of psiton rod.
Even if i do all i have is deep 11/16 socket. NO way in hell a box wrench is even getting close...
i'll give it one last try before i say f-it. and have it done.

Had to use a Dremel rotary cutter when nothing else worked. With a small cutting wheel it was a breeze.

as was mentioned by another member IMO use a deep socket rock the socket so that the shock rod will break off. too rusted to unscrew it .. keep the lower shock screws on to do this rod breaking .

I see you are in CT. That would explain the difficulty in removing anything on the underside of the car. You may find the speed nuts on the lower control arm difficult to acquire.

1991 OCC 461 (.030 over 454) BBC, 3.23 posi, flash to pass, drop spindles & springs, Impala rims, Hydroboost, Recaros, MOMO/wood SW w/QR, custom wood shift knob, Pioneer DEH P77DH
1992 OCC now with 5.7 tbi, DEH P77DH

okay, got part 457000 at advance auto parts, the speed nuts, and got doorman part 980-425, the bolts for the nuts.

i checked they at least fit each other. tomorrow i see if the speed nut fits in the bottom of the shock tower like the old ones did.

i got enough for both sides, but boy am i scared to do the PASS side, tomorrow. It's an even tighter spot to work in.
BTW the 3/16 allen head fits in the top shock piston rod PERFECTLY, but there is no room in there to get a wrench on the nut, so that seems useless to me, but i ain't no mechanic.

okay, later.
