C channel part of frame broken.

On my 96 Impala, I started hearing a clunking noise from the rear on left turns a couple weeks back. I guessed that it might be the differential starting to digest itself after a quarter million miles. Went to the trouble and mess of taking the cover off and it looks just like it did last year when I replaced the fluid - brand new. No teeth or debris in the bottom, no wear on the parts I could see. I figured, so that probably ain't it. While buttoning it back up, I looked over at the driver's side and noticed that the C channel part of the frame had broken off from where the frame starts to get serious again, a bit forward of the leaf spring mount. Didn't see any rust, looks like it just plain broke. Anyone else have this problem? I'll be taking it to a frame shop this week to get it fixed, wondering if there's any pitfalls to this problem I should know about.

...I assume you are talking "coil" spring

Frame fracture is usually from rust or collision so if it is a clean break and no rust, a frame shop could weld up the break. Likely box in that section of frame

"Why" did it break....if you aren't the original owner anything previously could have happened. Maybe someone did the Bullet chase scene with it and jumped the car :-)

I would have the shop do both sides exactly the same !

frames do flex ...................

cracked/broken frames are more common on these cars then people think. I remembered this old thread but its a shame the Pics are gone (Fing Photobucket) but there should be some good info in there for you.


As long as the Frame is relativelysolid, I would have no issues getting it Welded and would strongly consider getting sections boxed as well.

You know there are browser extensions to "fix" dead PB pics in threads, they'll stop working from time to time, but developers keep updating them. Gives the opportunity to archive stuff you want to keep.

Thanks all for the info. Yes, I was confused when I described the location of the break - it was ahead of the pocket that the upper control arm goes into - I had been working on my old Camaro the same day and that caused me to "mis-visualize" the leaf spring anchor when I was describing it. I'm off to the frame shop tomorrow to have it fixed and get some of the c channel boxed.

I couldn't find the link but Scot had suggested on here to just cut some pieces of steel strap. Use strap that is at least 2 inches wide and about 1/4 to 5/16 ths of an inch thick. He says you need about 8 on each side. Just weld them in place and then you won't have to weld in an entire piece of steel with holes cut for your body mounts. The strap is easier to get at Home Depot or Lowe's than having it cut to order.
