Steering shafts

My 96 Impala driver's side upper A arm bushings have disintegrated. While I;ll be in there i was thinking of upgrading the steering shaft - my orignal has 250,000 some odd miles on it and the rubber boot is cracked and falling apart.

I have a used Jeep shaft I might use but was also considering a Flaming River shaft instead. I was wondering how attaching the upper U joing to the stub from the steering wheel went - can someone relate what was involved?

I used an "EZ-fit" shaft from FlamingRiver. Drops right in,but not inexpensive...

FLaming River steering shaft

Looks pretty nice. What did you have to do to secure the top U-joint? Did you have to drill or file the stub from the steering wheel? If so, was working around the brake booster a problem?

The jeep shaft requires that you file a groove in the stub. If you turn the wheel about 90 deg. right, it is simple to do with a round file.

The Jeep shaft is for 92 and earlier.

OK, I managed to get one. It wasn't easy - Summit reports the item as no longer manufactured. I managed to get one directly from Flaming River, but they were a bit confused about the whole process. I managed to order one with 30 spline 3/4 inch on the box end and a 1 inch DD on the steering wheel end. Then UPS had trouble shipping it to me - the tracking shows it came to Houston (where I live), then left for Ft. Worth for a few days before coming back to Houston and finally to the house. But it looks like it was worth it. It is one beautiful piece of stainless steel - like a piece of mechanical sculpture.

It is showing a certain reluctance to install - the DD end doesn't want to go on the steering wheel DD. Before I start relieving everything with a dremel, did you have any trouble getting it to slide over the stub from the steering wheel?

I recall it was a tight fit. Don't recall exactly what all I did prior with respect to the edges themselves before (carefully) driving it into place one side at a time until it seemed acceptable. It sure isn't going to fall off,I can tell you that...

Try putting the top end on first. Check for burrs on the steering column, and the inside of the universal. I have not used their product, but have removed enough intermediate shafts to have some experience.

My steering intermediate shaft must be insulated from the heat of the headers on my 454. The one I replaced had the rubber seal crumble at my touch after less than 2 years.

There are some universal joints available on ebay for about $40 that can be adapted to the upper D shaft. I found that there are different length upper D shafts in the intermediate shaft from different cars. They vary by about an inch in length.

Shaft installed

OK, I tapered and deburred the edge of the D stub from the steering wheel using a dremel, and warmed up the new shaft DD end a little with a heat gun. That allowed me to get it started on. Then alternating taps on each side with a hammer and drift drove it all the way on. I had been concerned that the set screw setting into the old bolt hole wouldn't be secure enough, but now I'm comfortable that it's not going to come off accidentally - it's on there tight.

I do wish it collapsed more than 3 inches in case of an accident - but it looks so great I'll live with the risk. Looking forward to test driving it tomorrow.
