When installing the bottom T-bar mount of the front shocks, should it be on the outside of the LCA or the inside?
I know this might be a weird question but when I asked the tech for some help with the mounting hardware he sent over a picture of the shock installed with the T-bar inside the LCA which confused me a bit. When I asked if that was the correct mounting position he said it was for support. I'm pretty sure our stock shocks have the T-bar on the outside but I may be going crazy a bit.
Thank you both for the quick responses. It sounds like you can install it both ways depending on the application. This is a daily driver so I will be mounting them outside. If I run into any issues I guess I could always switch it to the inside.
Any tips on holding the inside nut in place as you tighten the bolts? Having issues getting a wrench or socket in there to keep it still.
That's why you want to use the Speed Nuts cause there is no nut to hold inside the Controlarm. If you hunt around, you may be able to find them in stainless. I also use just a dab of anti-seize on the bolts for easy removal later.
GM Shock Absorber Nuts M8-1.25 Screw Size - 371964 I found on ebay a box of 25 a few years ago. That's the PN at the end if you're looking for stock/originals.
Yeah, unless you have a coilover set up that would put all the weight of the front end on those bolts, there is no need to mount them inside.
The shock does most of it's work on the rebound (extension) of the shock, so the T-bar on the bottom is theoretically "better", but I'm guessing it won't make much difference.
Maybe try something like this with the T-Bar on top of the control arm?
It doesn't really matter. If mounted below then it's easier to remove the shock absorber when it needs to be replaced.
Is this particular installation a coilover? If so, then you'd want to be sure to have the shock absorber installed on the topside of the LCA with reinforcement. The weight of the car can otherwise rip the shock out of the LCA (speaking from experience).
