I just purchased new front end parts for my 94 Caprice Wagon. The parts store I do business with just switched over to the Spicer suspension line made by Dana Corp. The stuff seems quality, but how does it compare to Moog? I did go to another store for the problem solver idler arm, everything else is Spicer. Any comments? Nick P.

I think the only concern might be from the standpoint of name recognition. Spicer is part of Dana, a very well known company in the automotive/transportation industry. Moog is part of Federal Mogul. These companies are rivals in many areas--F-M did file bankruptcy last year, but they are still in business. The Moog name is well known thanks to marketing--especially the front fender shot of every NASCAR racer on the planet....

I do like some of the features of the Spicer/Perfect Circle parts--things like the molded blue polyurethane boot that is pre-crimped on the B-body upper ball joint. Much better than the Moog 3-piece design, in my opinion. There may be other features to like about these parts--here's some Spicer website info:

Another interesting thing is that ACDelco/GM is now offering the Spicer parts line in their all-brands suspension parts replacement program.

Here are some samplings of what is available for the B-body--note that all prices listed are COST as shown on GM Parts Direct website. You will need to add 10% to get an equivalent price for most "good" sources for these parts. I've provided both the GM number and ACDelco number for each item:

One of our local parts suppliers changed over to spicer last year, and they brought a Spicer rep to give us his little sales pitch. He had actual idler arms from Chevy Astro vans (which are even more of a problem than the B-cars) that were cut-a-ways. They are much tougher looking. We installed them on our Astro del. vans last year and have not had any problems with them yet. If mine had not been new I would have used one.

Is there a kit that has all of these components in a nice package? Moog or the Danas? Oh yea, what is the reason for replacing the centerlink?

Expect to hear from Zack--he has a kit-see the link at top of this page for PPM.

The center link wears out, since it has spherical joints--similar to those in tie-rods.

I found the link...thanks! I was wondering about the Moog set, though...or is this set that much better?

One of the big difference in the ACDelco to Moog is that the Moog is still steel to steel or "Gusher" design inside that joint. The is what wears even with greasing. The ACDelco uses a polymer insert so the joint is not steel to steel. Also the perminately attached boot will not allow grease to wash out or salt to get in on the joints that have that boot. Dana has long relationship as supplier to GM and they were able to meet production demands in order supply ACDelco. FM was considered unstable at the time.
