NO Shims! Need Advice - Chevy Impala SS Forum

Had an alignment done last week on my 96 Impala and then started to hear a poping sound in the front left at slow speed. At first I assumed it to be the steering stops and lube them but the noise was till there. I have just taken a 300 mile interstate trip and didn't hear the pop until I took the off ramp and braked. In the parking lot where I am currently at I opened the hood and noted that there are NO SHIMS between the upper control arm inner support shaft and the support bracket on the left hand suspension. I can see recent wear on both bolts from some movement. I don't know if the shims were not installed or fell out after the alignment. I have no idea what this is doing to the caster and camber. There appears to be no strange wear on the front left tire and the car tracked well on the interstate.

My question is: Is is safe to drive the car back 300 interstate miles to the shop that did this "alignment" for them to correct it or should I take it to a shop where I am at to have the shims installed (and another alignment)?

Don't drive it more than you have to (aka to a local alignment shop). It may make it fine, but with suspension loose, your only asking for trouble, and it could be very serious trouble.

If I were you I'd take it to a local alignment shop, have them align it. Save the recipt, and get the alignment shop to write you a letter stating that the shims were gone. Take the recipt and letter to the shop that did the bad alignment and give it to them. Hopefully they'll understand and pay you back for the alignment.
If possible maybe you could call the alignment shop and tell them what happened, hopefully they will work with you and help you get it fixed.

Lynn has the right idea. Phone the shop before you have it aligned. There is nothing worse than a person showing up with a bill saying they had to get their car fixed some where and the evidence , for lack of a better term , is gone. Most shops are more than willing to pay for their mistakes if they get a phone call first by a pleasent car owner explaining their situation and asking for help. My shop has been on both sides of this problem. Fixing others mistakes and unfortunatly sometimes having shops miles away fixing something we overlooked or fixed improperly. Use the right attitude when phoning and I am sure your original shop will be more than willing to reimburse you. Regards Gerry

Good advice from both of you. I will call the shop that did the alignment and tell them of my problem. Then its going to a local shop for the correction. Lynn, I agree with you, something loose in the front can only lead to bad things.

Well gang, had the alignment done Saturday morning and made the 300 interstate miles return trip tonight at normal "Impala" speed.

Everything went well, car tracks good and the noise is gone. The shop I took it to did a complete check and found no faults with the front end.

I experienceing the same problem with sharp slow turns...its when i turn te steering wheel all the way to the left its a crunch poppin noise....Someone posted a letter stateing it was a common problem and how to fix it...Mannnn i couldt understand it at all to much technical terms i not a wrench head lol..I would prefer easy talk lol...

I just replaced a-arm bushings & all ball joints, the loud popping has gone away. I had it up on stands doing the brakes a few weeks back & had someone turn the wheel lock to lock & you could see the lower ball joint move up & POP at the end of the turn. Just did a 700 miler this weekend & it sure was easier to drive. All moog "enhanced" parts were about $190. & I helped a co-worker install them. All day dirty job. I wished I could have paid the $250-$350 the shops ask but I'm glad we did it ourselves. Hope this helps.
