Arrow BMW V12 powered Chevrolet Caprice

Just found this little jewel. Looks real to me. Anyone know anything about this car?

I read an article on that car. GM was considering going with bmw engines and transmissions in there full size cars to reduce noise and gain some mileage. Reportedly that car was ultra quiet at idle and and made little vibration and pulled like a freight train. I thought I remembered that the car was shredded along with a bunch of other GM one offs like the IROC that had 4 wheel steering and the targa roofed GEO metro. The same article had the 510 big block powered Camaro and the big block Moss Impala.

pretty sure that Caprice was sold in the same auction as the 510 a couple years ago.

That is an authentic photo. I saw a TV show that highlighted some of the research/prototypes of GM (many years ago). GM approached BMW on buying the powertrain, but BMW said no. So they just sent a rep out as a regular citizen and bought an entire car. GM was researching how the public would accept the V12 sound/rhythm vs. the V8.

Turned out that the sound was important to the focus group peeps. I found that hard to believe when I heard it, but years later I think that I understand. After attending some pro road races, I learned that all of that Euro stuff sounds like an Asian engine....yuck. Then a Corvette C6R or Cadillac CTS-V would go by....ahhhhh a symphony to the ears.

About the same time (at least during the same generation of Caprice) they did one with Corvette powertrain as well.

Considering the 7 series reliability of that year caprice I would stay as far away as I could.

They used box body wagons to perform durability testing of the lt1 powerplant for the vette. That was in HOT ROD I think. They did 4 or 6 of them IIRC.

It was part of GM's drive-by-wire development program.

It's a real interesting modification. Be a shame if it went through the crusher! I'd love to take it for a spin! I've never driven a Beemer with the v-12 so I wouldn't know what to expect from it.
