engine issues

Hey all,

I recently did a tune up on my 93 caprice wagon and everything was great for awhile. Then at interstate speeds (or when towing something), I noticed that I would lose power, the check engine light would come and then it would start to overheat. Any suggestions?

See what codes are stored causing the check engine light.

Most chain autoparts stores will do this for free (Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Orilies, etc).

What was involved in your tune up?

There are two things I would check first. I would check the O2 sensor/computer ground at the thermostat housing. If that does not help, I would also check the O2 sensor itself. The O2 sensor is easy to replace. It is on the front of the driver's side exhaust manifold, and can be removed with a box end wrench if you disconnect the wire, and thread it through the wrench.

I have had the alternator bearings self destruct and cause a load on the engine. The alternator self destruction can also stop the engine.

How recent is recent? And how long is 'awhile' that it ran great?

Like Fix Until -, I am interested in what this tune-up included. Did you otherwise open up the cooling for an unrelated reason? Is this overheating something you watch on a gauge, or do you just have an idiot light? Are you losing AF?

I would lean towards bad O2 sensors I had same type of symptoms.
