Pypes cat-back kit as-is or swap in Dynomax mufflers?

Hey guys,

I'm finally pulling the trigger on a cat-back exhaust for my 96 Impala SS.
The car is completely stock minus the K&N cold air intake.

I'm probably going to order the Pypes Street Pro Exhaust system (SGI10S) from Summit, but I'm wondering if I should use the mufflers that come with this kit (Pypes Street Pro mufflers), or if I should get some Dynomax Ultra Flo SS mufflers instead?

http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/pye-sgi10s/overview/

Will the Dynomax Ultra Flo SS mufflers swap into this kit with no issues?
I'm not sure on inlet/outlet sizes, and I'm also concerned about the overall length of kit changing with different mufflers.

Also, how do the Pypes Street Pro mufflers compare to the Dynomax Ultra Flo SS mufflers in sound and quality?
I don't want anything loud, and I don't want popcorn.

Thanks!

First off, of all the 'performance' mufflers for our cars, the Dynomax are generally regarded as among the best for performance as well as being the quitist.

Secondly, IIRC the Pypes system is 2 1/2".....so you'll want mufflers that are 2 1/2" in and 2 1/2" out.

Third, the DynoMax mufflers in the link, which are almost $133 each, should fit fine although the Pype's X-pipe may have to be cut a bit.

In the below link, you'll want one of each muffler part number.

Finally, I have no idea our the DynoMax compares to the Pypes mufflers....never had them, never heard them....as far as I know.

Why not try the Race Pro version? That muffler is the same design/construction as the Ultra-flo (straight thru perforated core). And when you look on their site, they say it's their quietest muffler.

I used the same kit. The Pypes mufflers were louder than stock, but still quiet enough to not annoy the neighbors. The system does not have resonators, so there will be a bit of drone at certain RPM's/conditions. Mine bolted up easily.

Just get the car up on ramps/jack stands and start from the front toward the back. Keep the fasteners a little loose to get everything in place, then gradually tighten things up.

I wanted to use the stock muffler hangers instead of the universal ones in the kit, so I wired them in place temporarily, then took to local muffler shop to have them welded to the stock hangers...$20.

Pypes Kit

Zak

I have to agree with 94MI9C1. By the way very classy set up 94MI9C1. I have the Pypes Race Pro kit and it was a easy bolt in. Once my mufflers burnt in good it gave it a more agressive tone which I love. Not to loud, not to quiet, just enough. The Dynomax Ultra-Flo SS mufflers also sound great. Really the muffler choice is left up to you.

Update:

So I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the DynoMax 17375 - Ultra Flo SS Aluminized Steel Cat-Back System.
I found a place in Canada that still had some kits left with free shipping.
Can't wait to get it installed.

Not exhaust related, but a friend and I replaced the original plugs and wires with NGK Iridium IX plugs and MSD 8.5mm wires over the weekend.
Holy Christ was that ever a bitch of an install.
Glad it's done though. :)

Wow  !!!!!

Dynomax (Walker) stopped selling the entire kit like 7-8 years ago.

Great catch!!!

Got the exhaust installed yesterday.
Sounds way better than I could have imagined.
Very nice at idle, no drone, not too loud, and you can actually hear it from the inside.
I was also surprised at how deep the sound was, like a low bass.
