Question Looking for brake drum recommendations

I got a set of Brembo drums from Rock Auto as I wanted a drum that I thought was good quality and balanced. They were out of round and warped and because I was 30 days past purchase date, Rock Auto would not exchange or replace (they were on closeout)

Any recommendations on a quality drum that will be properly balanced by the factory...Right now, it seems like ACDelco Professional Dura- are my best choice; though a bit pricey ($77 ea)

And here I JUST replied to another thread about drums. I had unfortunate experience ordering drums mailorder (completely different casting numbers on each, and visibly different grind pattern). I ended up getting a good pair at NAPA (~$45?) after researching selections from the 'other' 3 major local chains. AFAIK they come new already ground and pretty much balanced, evidenced by either lugs welded on or drill cavities. Clean and paint them BEFORE installing. If you have opener spokes you'll thank me later when trhey look like $YIF.


EDIT: Just thought have you ruled out turning yours? Maybe $15-25/ea. nowadays?

https://www.gmpartsprime.com/ has a great selection of OEM Impala brake drums at up to 50% off MSRP and come with the factory warranty. They are legit! They also carry a ton of hard to find parts that my local dealer is unable to source.

Unhappy Brake Drums

Well went with NAPA; car still shook, but less. The rr drum was out of balance 4oz. So I'm going to take it back. Also, the shoes are now hanging up...What the hell did that guy do? Hiw can you screw up drum brakes> He wants me to bring the car to him..."prolly brake hoe or wheel cylinder". I call BS...no such problem until after I effed up and trusted him.

The ones I put on had been turned. I got new ones from NAPA. NO casting numbers, made in China. Cleaned and painted them. Took them to shop, L out of balance by 1/2 oz, right by 4oz. Now right shoes hang-up, don't release. I knew I should have done these brakes myself. How do you screw up rear drums? New AC Delco drums at advance $80; I almost feel like converting to Impala SS rear end for all of this time and aggravation.

That's a new one for me. I've never had drums checked for balance. Do you use a tire balancer? Shoes hanging could be anything from just too tight, grease on the shoes or just worn hardparts. And yes, anything as critical and cheap and simple as brakes you should do yourself. Not to rub it in, but the way to "screw up rear drums" is letting ANYONE else do them.


Not at all clear why you're still hunting for new drums. Take the money and treat the car to all brand new hardware, including slave cyl. if at all suspect. And I'd keep the NAPA drums but toss the shoes and start with fresh ones. Good luck - stick with it. Been there, just not for the past several decades lol.

find your comments very funny on how can a person screw up install on brake drum, shoes.

much more complicated than rotors/calipers much more...
examples, shoes reversed ,park brake cable ,springs,adjuster wheel...
one time I was installing my brake shoes on my 1984 camaro. well I got those shoes from auto zone. I screwed up because I did not match up the old to new. so I could not put drums on WTF ! then I set the old shoes next to new and the new shoe friction material was not in the correct position .. so I brought the shoes back and showed the AZ guy these are defective with the OEM shoes ..I put back the old shoes because I had to wait for another set.. next week later I go back they said yes we have your shoes .. guess what happened AZ gave me the same F'ed up shoes.. I then went to another store .. still have my 84 camaro with those shoes I got from another store .
auto repair work today is like going to Casino ..

Youc an still get the factory GM BIG drums from some GM parts sellers. Alot popped up maybe 1.5- 2 years ago About 120 a piece + ALOT shipping. Paid like crazy $ for mine I have the part number around somewhere. They come in OLD dusty boxes. The number was GONE for years I guess some warehouse was found and they were lost inventory they had alot of them like 40 or so in stock Dunno how many are left now The small sedan drums? Dunno


Found it. 1244646 or 01244646. Gm parts giant has some maybe? ACD 177-359. When u get em u see "646" and the other numbers are cast into them I have this stupid old rotor and brake drum pile coated in oil.... heavy

That number pulls up the standard 11x2 drum on a couple of sites. They show 17#, but I could swear my Napas weighed 23# on a bathroom scale. Just checked and Napa has standard ABS at $40, and the bigger limo ones at $103.
