USB power outlet

Has anybody changed out the cigarette lighter outlet to a USB power outlet? Is it an easy install of just hooking up a power and ground wire from the cigarette outlet to the USB power outlet?

I have a plug in but looking into just having something permanent instead of having something stick out.

Where are you planning on mounting that piece you have? Looks like you would have to drill the Dash or Console somewhere. I would hate to drill a big hole in those hard to find items. Also, is that piece you have pictured designed to work off of a 12 Volt Source?

I have the Z28 cluster so I didn't mind losing the Trip/Metric Reset Switch on the dash. Instead I installed another 12V adapter there and just picked up a 12V USB Plugin for that port. It looks clean and your aren't really sacrificing your dash. The plugin is round and Black (resembles another lighter) which blends right in to the dash and has the LED on it when pushed all the way into the socket. Not sure of the current draw but just keep it pulled out of the socket when not in use. That may be a concern if you permanently wire in that connector you have pictured. Maybe this thread will give you some ideas.....

I would just take out the cigarette lighter and replace with the one I pictured. Yes it does work off a 12v source.

As long as the current draw of that device does not exceed the Circuit rating (which it shouldn't) you should be fine. Pop out the Lighter module (Plastic Piece) and remove the lighter assembly. I think the metal case on the back side just unscrews and hopefully your USB Plug will fit that opening.

You will have to cut the Lighter connector plug though from the harness and make up some connections for the 2 wires. I would not solder the wires directly to the pins just in case you need to remove/replace it at some point. If you can't find connectors that attach to those pins of the USB plug, just solder a short length of wire to those connectors and then use some plugs of your choice on the other side so that you can unplug the USB charger from the harness if needed.

Parasitic electrical load

The only down side may be a continuous power drain on the battery when parked. This would not be a problem for a daily driver but a garage queen would get a dead battery. Every device is different your's may not draw power when not in use or it may suck current at all times.

Since I overdo most electrical installations I have a three way switch on my usb. Constant power, Off, and an ignition feed.

Yeah its a daily so not to worried about it on all the time. I usually have a plug in usb that has a blue led on constantly.
