Dash lights Tail Lights Remote Start
Car is 1996 Impala SS. I've looked up this and found a few threads but nothing is helping me. My issue is I have no dash lights (speedometer ac heat shifter). Fuse 42 does pop after a few mins. Even with new fuse the lights for interior never turn on. My TS when pushed up does turn on dome light. The auto lights does work. Interior lights don't work when switched on using switch. The chime doesn't work when I leave lights on with key out. Now here's what's weird. When I use the remote start the tail lights do come on. I crank using the remote and about 5 seconds the tail lights come on. Soon as I enter the key and step on the brake the tail lights cut off. If i lock the doors I can hear the chime when standing outside the door. The chime works when lights flash for alarm. I NEED my car. Any help!?

Instead of going thru a bunch of fuses, wire up a 12 volt bulb so you can put it in place of fuse 42. (Also remove the taillights fuse 43 so eliminate them for now) The short to grd will cause the bulb (installed in place of fuse 42) to be ON. Disconnect, each item this fuse serves one at a time until the light goes out. That will tell what is shorting to grd. If the light does not go out. you have a wire shorted to grd before it connects to each item. That will be harder to find. You will be tracing a gray wire.
Now the tail light fuse 43 popping when fuse 42 is put in says the taillight circuit is somehow connected to the interior lights circuit. Taillight wire is purple.
Impalas did not come with remote start. Taillights come on with remote start. This may have something to do with it.
Dome light is different circuit/fuse than interior lights (meaning dash/ control lights NOT courtesy/dome lights) is why it works when light switch commands it.
