Intermittent power antenna operation

There are times when my power antenna won't retract after I turn the motor off or turn the radio off. This is an intermittent problem - doesn't happen all the time. When it does happen and I leave the car parked, I come back and the antenna has retracted by itself. What is causing this?

Do the easy thing first - spray it with WD40 or similar.

And make sure wire connection is good - 3 wire connector by fuse box.

Do not lubricate the antenna mast. Just clean it. You may have a poor connection either at the antenna, or the radio. You should check both connectors. The worst case scenario is that the cable is broken. You can check the cable by pulling on the top of the antenna when it is about 4 inches from the top, or push it down gently when it is at the top. The antenna should not move more than a quarter inch or so. If you can pull it up, the cable is probably broken.

One other issue may be the brushes are worn, and do not make good contact with the armature in the up position. The armature moves about 1/4 inch back and forth to activate the internal switch to change directions. The contacts on the internal switch may also make poor contact. If that is the issue, you will have to open the case to clean them.
