CS144 alternator rebuild kit?

I'm looking for a reputable seller of rebuild kits for the alternator in my '96 9C1. Searching the web and the forums has produced conflicting opinions about who to use (not to mention older info) The ones I have found do not ship to Canada. I do not want to buy a reman or new unit, can't justify the cost. The local guys don't carry kits or do not want to sell them.

Does anyone have up to date suggestions or links?

what I did a dozen years ago was look up all the individual part numbers, go to my local auto electrical rebuild shop and buy the parts.
not sure but may even have gotten the bearings from them.
may not even need part numbers if they know the specific model of alternator.

if you do a total rebuild there is some soldering involved, either for the regulator or the brushes don't remember.

Watts in the kit?

Are you looking for brushes and bearings or "everything"

I checked with my local Canadian Tire/Partsource today and they had a kit for my 94 at $92 CND parts guy thought the price was high because it had diodes but was not sure. Rock auto has no core return alternators for $140 CND plus shipping.

Most small town auto part stores can get brushes and bearings or kits. In the big city there are rebuild shops. They may not be on the net or in the yellow pages but a conversation or two at some independent big rig repair shops or heavy equipment shops will root them out. They have to be approached carefully as they want all your business not just a $20 part sale. When I go in with all car info and alternator info and a handfull of parts I usually get what I want. Some places want to "feel " the part due to changes in manufacture of the unit over it's production. This is why internet buying can be a problem and some kits include unneeded parts that you pay for. I use to rebuild alternators but without wholesale pricing replacement seems easier.

Be wary of the rebuilt and new units being sold by most of the generic parts sources. Most of these are put together very cheaply and quality varies quite a bit. I purchased a new manufactured Remy unit for $140ish and it was toast in about 1 year. The bridge rectifier assembly seemed to be the culprit, its an expensive part that if you go cheap on you run the risk of easier failure. This part is put under even more stress when people try to add amperage without upgrading.

Alternatorparts.com is my main go to for parts. The stuff they manufacture in house is very high quality. I got pissed off and built a charging system that uses 3 bridge rectifiers and an external voltage regulator, its supposed to be able to make somewhere around 240amps and capable of 420amps but I have not tested it. ASP wholesale might be okay for small parts and hard parts, but I would never buy another unit from them. Mine never quite worked right and after educating myself, their unit was not built to sufficiently handle the amperage they advertised (see the bridge rectifier comment above). That made me question their competency.

I bought brush kit for under $3 and front & rear bearings for IIRC around $8 & $12 at O'Rielys auto parts

the problem was I didn't have a press to get the rear bearing out. Found a shop to do it for $25

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

The bearings grenaded and locked it up. Took it apart and found the rectifier to be faulty as well as the capacitor insulation cracking apart (no doubt from excessive heat). Brushes seem fine as does the rest of the unit. So yeah, bearings, rectifier, capacitor... I figure I may as well get a complete kit while I have it apart and do it once. Local pricing for a reman unit is in the neighbourhood of $300+. Thanks for the heads up on ASP, it seems that a few on this forum don't trust their stuff. I'll check with Cdn Tire and Benson in the nearby city tomorrow (gonna be there anyway) and hope that they can help. In the meantime, I'll check out alternatorparts.com to be better informed about pricing/quality. Love this forum for the wealth of info and experiences shared! I'll post up what ends up happening with this.

Wow... I might just go with the upgrade kit from alternatorparts.com if nothing pans out locally.
Has anyone had bad experience from them, shipping and the like?

Haven't bought parts from them but I did have a question for them. Called and spoke with them (think it was the same guy in the video) about an issue I was having and they were very helpful and informative. If/when I need parts for my cs144 they are who I'll go to.

They took a little bit longer than I expected to ship me my quicktifier external rectifier unit. I think it was like 2-3 weeks. But the wait was worth it.
