My 96 wont start. Bendix jumps up no turning over at all

All,

The title says it all. My car was sitting in my backyard for 2 years, now I'm trying to bring her back. When I hooked my voltmeter up to the end of the cable that connects to the starter she gets 12 full volts. Then when I turn the key to the on position it goes to 11 volts. But as soon as I turn the key to the Start position the voltage drops to 0.66. I made sure to clean the spots where I have my voltmeter connected down to shiny metal so dirt/corrosion would interfere as little as possible.

Anyone have any suggestions? At first I thought it was the cable but now I'm not so sure. I really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

You have a dead battery.

Old cars, just like classic rock... 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s!

I tried to listen and understand where you had the meter hooked up .

IF you have both leads right on the battery , and the terminals are clean and tight then I would agree with Jayoldschool , Battery issue . Likely bad cell or broken internal strap.

If you are somewhere else , you could have a bad connection between where you are hooked up and the battery.

Try right at battery first. if the big drop does not happen, work your way out to isolate.

Known issues are the connection at the fuse block ( the old problem was a zinc stud but one would think that 12 years later we have all addresed that )
Battery ground at front of block

To check the ground, put your lead on batt neg and the engine block and try to crank.
In a perfect world you will see near nothing but a volt or so is common.

Do the same check battery positive to stud at fuse block
Also battery positive to large lug on starter .
Again, there should be little to no voltage shown when you try to crank.

If you see any large numbers, there is your connection issue .
Ah and BTW , these cars do not have a Bendix
They have solenoids and roller clutches

You have a bad starter. The fact that the Bendix engages but the starter motor doesn't spin and the voltage drops off instantly is a sure sign of a shorted or stuck started motor. You could tap on the starter case with a hammer lightly and then try again and it might free it up.

While we will only know once he fixes it , I would argue that the voltage would not drop as low as .66 with an internally shorted or jammed starter.
If there is a positive to negative "connection" that robust, I think smoke would be part of this conversation
Also hitting a starter that won't turn is typically to jar worn brushes to make contact. Those cases , the draw is low
Also, hitting the production permanent magnet LT1 starter is not recommended.
Time will tell

vehicle sat 2 years in back yard ? over soil or a solid paved surface ? battery removed and placed in a protected location with a charging system for storage ? jumper used was with copper cables and clamps ?

battery connections must be wire brushed cable/battery post.. key to crank battery volts should not drop to less than 1 volt. solenoid made a noise because it did not contact the feed to starter immediately that is why it made noise as it did hit the starter connection then the volts dropped off to less than 1 volt.

if the starter has corroded brushes / commutator then the volts would not drop .. if the engine or starter is seized I would expect smoke or the starter getting very hot ..

how did you treat the gas ? if not treated , drop the tank and flush it out or sh*t will happen ..............

You left the battery in the car. It's dead. This is not rocket science. Remove battery, replace with fresh one. Forget the boost pack. Pour in a fresh jug of gas. Turn key, start car. Easy.
