Thermostat

My 96 temp hand has been rising not all the way to the red, but enough for me to keep an watchful eye on it. I changed the thermostat to a colder running one but the problem still slightly occurring. Any idea what this could be?

It makes no difference unless you program the fans to come on at lower temps in the PCM. Search the forum and you will find the information you are seeking.

Thanks I've never reprogrammed fans before what's the simplest method to do so?

The simplest is to remove the PCM and send it to a tuner with ALL your car's information so that they can load a new program. HOWEVER, you car will be down, without a PCM for 7 to 10 days.

Other option is to send your car's information to the tuner and have the tuner email you a tune.....which you would then download into your car yourself. You'd need a laptop....the correct cables.....the proper connections.....etc.

The thermostat determines the LOWER operating temp parameter.
Most thermostats are fully open 16F AFTER their rating - 160F=176F, 180F=196F, & 195F=211F.

The fan-on temps programmed into the pcm determine the UPPER operating temp parameter.
Since the OEM program turns on the fans at 229F & 234F, the needle still gets close enough to the 'red' to warp exhaust gaskets, break exhaust bolts, and accelerate the dry rotting of vacuum hoses and plastic fittings underhood.

So if you have a 160F thermostat and stock fan-on temps, your engine operates between 176F & 235F, instead of 195F & 235F with the OEM thermostat.

Long story, short - reprogram your fans; the sooner, the better.

You can also buy a spare pcm from your tuner, with your personal custom program already installed, for approx $100-$125 more.
