Wiper Refill Sources
I'm not a big fan of the newer aftermarket wiper blades being sold for our cars, and with refills for the OEM blades getting harder to find I thought I would document the sources I've found. The good news is that it's still possible to find refills for both the "standard" wiper blade and the winged 9C1 blade. Both use 22" refills. All results are specific to my 1995 Impala SS, but I believe they're applicable to other B-bodies that use the same OEM blades.
The "standard" OEM blade and wiper is still available from GM under service part number 25689175. MSRP is currently about $12, but it can be had for less from a number of online vendors. The refill for this blade requires integral "rails" to mount it in the blade.
A refill that works with the 25689175 blade can be bought from GM; the service part number is 22155433. MSRP is about $8.00, but again, they can be found for less. I've bought them both individually and in a package of two. I've read reports that the Anco U22R refill will work, but I found that the mounting rail is too thick to fit without having to open up the prongs on the blade. I haven't yet found an aftermarket source that is confirmed to fit without hacking.
The winged 9C1 blade (originally specified for the driver's side only) appears to be obsolete from GM. It was sold under service part number 10283602. You may still be able to find them new from vendors who specialize in obsolete parts.
I haven't found a refill from GM that fits the 10283602 blade. The rubber insert for this blade is attached using a stainless steel retainer that slides into the prongs on the blade. To replace the insert you need to pinch the sides of the retainer to remove it from the blade. With the retainer and insert separated from the blade you can remove the insert from the retainer. A new insert can be installed by slipping it into the retainer and reinstalling the retainer when finished.
I've found two sources for replacement rubber inserts. The first may also be obsolete, but if you can find them Lexor Profile "E" inserts will work. I just paid about $5 for a set of two. These are a 28" "cut to fit" insert. The second source is your favorite BMW parts supplier. The part number is 61-61-1-470-281; this is a 24" rubber insert made by Bosch. A set of two will cost around $20 at a BMW dealer, but they can be found for much less with a little online searching.
I hope this helps others who want to reuse their OEM blades. Please report other confirmed sources if you know of any.
