I hate to beat a dead horse... but I just got my show results today... rather interesting if you take a look at them

Lets start with front exterior... Bumper/grill/airdam... avg of 4.5... not too shabby, knowing that I have scraped the hell out of the airdam with my lowered SS...

Headlights... avg of 2.5?! What the heck, how much better can you get than brand new? I mean after my wreck, all that stuff had to be replaced...

Paint Hood, fenders, mirrors... avg 5... damn straight, there be fresh paint on every square inch of my SS

Windshield wipers avg 4... yea I know, they dont look so hot after 120k miles, but atleast I had new blades

Tires/Wheels... again, all four have less than 300 miles on them... and I took them off the night before and had them shiney as hell... then I cleaned the stupid tire treads as I waited in line...

Brakes - calipers: 3, yea they werent soo hot looking =/ I would tend to agree with that

Fender wells, frame, swayber... 3... well the fender wells are new, the frame has been raped and straightened twice and the swaybar is brand new... is dark rust colored frame worth 2 points?

Engine... We wont even go into this... the best I got was a 4, yea it was kinda gross... I just couldnt get it all clean before they judged it... I thought the previous owner had everything black powder coated... then I took some simple green to an oilspot and found out otherwise, been tryin for months to get that gunk off there

Interior: Doors and whatnot was a 3, and I agree... it is a 94 that has been less than well taken care of by the previous owner. The rear got a little bit better, thankfully... maybe cause it didnt have two fat guys sweating on it for 300 miles between when it got cleaned and when it got judged

Aft quarter panels, back glass... 4.5 avg for brand new paint, brand new moldings... brand new body. wheel wells, frame and tailpipe... I can understand the deductions. Hey, atleast they gave me a 5 on my rear quarter scripts... The guy who spent 4 hours measuring and putting them on perfectly thanks ya =)

and last but not least, trunk interior/exterior. Condition of paint... freakin 3.5?! what the hell... its brand new fresh paint with new emblems and new spoiler... but my other paint marks are 4.5-5. and what about liscence plate area... I had brand new mountings on there and all I got was a 3 =/. This one really throws me... my trunk carpet got a 4.5, with two burn holes in it, and I didnt even bother to sweep the trunk let alone detail it. Spare tire/cover was crappy, and the score shows it.

I am by no means looking to flame on the judges, I am simply looking for help on what needs to be done to correct my problems... tips and tricks so to speak, especially on the brand new sections of the car.

You have 3 or 4 guys in your new local club who are "detailing" experts who have a LOT of experience prepping cars for car shows (and winning trophies).

Attention (extreme) to detail is the key here. The folks who win tend to be a little fanatical about this (toothbrushes, Q-tips, etc.) Cleanliness is what will win those trophies. Example: The license plate score includes the area BEHIND the license plate, which is an area that many people never touch - yet some people detail to the point you could eat off of it.

Ask and look around at one of our IndipalaSS events and you'll get a lot of good advice.

I'm still trying to figure out how my INTERIOR door panels could be rusty! Last time I checked, they were plastic and cloth.

Ehehe, Ill have to get with Chino at super chevy if I see him =)

Again, It was not intended that it be harsh towards the judges. I believe they were all volunteers, and for that I am thankful that they even were there.

I just thought it rather funny how things that I spent a lot of effort on, got bad scores and things that I spend no time on what so ever got decent to good scores =P

You must have those super-duper rare rust prone door panels which are rumored to be installed on only 1 SS in the country.

Having been a Car Show Judge and also having competed for trophies, I can tell you that virtually all of the doors that I saw had some flaws. They may have looked pristine in the inside with gorgeous attention to detail on the vinyl and carpeted surfaces but fell short on the hinges and latches that showed traces of rust. If you look carefully, and all judges do, you will probably see areas along the seam at the bottom of the door and along the hinges that may be slightly rusty . . those are quick points off and although the rest of the door is perfect that gets you a lower score.

What would really help is, if the day before the car show judging was to take place, a class on detailing and what judges look for (rust on the hinges, rust on the cast iron exhaust manifold that you can see through the exhaust heat shields, dirt on the corners of the package shelf, etc) would be real helpful. I have done that for my local club and it makes a big difference at the very next showing.

I have been a judge -- many times. I also know my car. I cleaned, polished and dressed all of the door hinges, latches, seams, mouldings etc. with a q-tip and I know for a fact that there is no rust there. I also know that the interior door panels are not rusty either.
