Aftermarket rpm guage info

i want to install an aftermarket rpm guage on my steering column because the LT1 roadmasters didnt come with rpm like the 91-93 roadmasters did but no listings have good enough detail to how their installed...suggestions ideas !!??

A lot of people put the tach on the a pillar. If you put it on the column, it will either block the view of a gauge, or the steering wheel will block the gauge. Since it is more for show, the A pillar is a place you can see it, and it will not block any other gauges. There are trim pieces for the A pillar that will accept gauges and look "factory". The come for 2 and 3 gauges, so you may have to put another gauge, like trans temp, or fuel pressure to fill the second space.

thats not the issue i seen the pods that are available for the pillar but i dont want my car to look like an import piece of ****...plus i dont drive a honda civic so it looks stupid...i want a gauge for my column and one small enough that itll only cover the PRNDL on the dash regardless...i kno what is available i juss need to kno who makes a good accurate gauge for the LT1 and can be installed without an aftermarket ignition box...

AutoMeter offers a tach in the 2-5/8" diameter. Otherwise,one of the programmable shift-lights w/digital tach display may suit your purposes. I use one myself,but already have an analog tach display The a-pillar pod would accept the 2-5/8" tach in the bottom location. I would consider that solution if my car did not have a dash tach.

that looks sikk but thats an impala or caprice and they are a sportier b-body anyways so thats ok to do it that to the interior i wont go that route on a roadmaster ahha...which is why i just want the center rpm gauge in the same place you have the small gauge on the column...but i have a huge center tach on the dash right in the middle and thats the route i want to go i just need to kno which gauge company is best without an ignition box to wire it too...2nd picture ( red circle ) is where i want to put it and roughly same size

It is difficult to tell from the photo if the 2-5/8" tach would obstruct that much of the dash,or more. The gauge will definitely be more difficult to mount there than the shift-light style. My PCM has a tach wire (I believe it is white),and yours may too. Check the pin-outs in your FSM,the computer knows the rpm of the engine. I use/recommend AutoMeter products,and have never had a moments trouble out of any of them.

Why not just use the one in your climate control display? I agree with the others. I like my Autometer Super Comp. tach. The PCM pin is 13A IIRC.

i spoke with the guys at summitracing today and they said all of the electronically controlled tachs they have can be controlled with the green wire from the tach to the negative side of the ignition coil and there wont be a problem installing any electronically controlled tach that way...i asked specifically about an autometer tach but they said any one can work...thanks for your help guys really narrowed it down for me

I went "whole hog" and put the Z28 cluster in my Roadmaster.
Now have volts and oil pressure along with the tach and it looks like it was done from the factory.
I started the project years ago using the back part and lense of the Roadie cluster to hold and adapt the Z28 gauges.
Because of time I finally relented and paid Gary at [email protected] to get me a turn-key kit.
He did a great job and the install was very easy. Needed a new OP sender, tach wire to the ECU and a little plastic cutting behind the cluster to make it fit. Other than that it was plug and play.
My 92 Custom Cruiser had the gauge package, 'don't know why GM deleted it with the LT1!!??

1996 Roadmaster Wagon; DGGM with Tan Leather.
Factory Stuff: Grand Touring Suspension, Towing Package and Heated Seats w/Driver Side Memory.
Deleted Stuff: Wood and Chrome Trim.
Added Stuff: Wilwood Front Calipers and Rear Discs, Z28 Gauges, Rear Sway Bar, Cadi flash to pass; 9C1 Front Springs; BBN Shorty Headers; Flashed PCM; SS Wheels w/Buick Centers; LED running lights; Clear Headlights; SS Trim Spears; Navi with BU Camera, Rain Sensing Wipers; GS and LT1 Trim; Sedan Rear Seats with Heat.

I have a 5" tach. on my steering column. I can't see the digitial MPH and don't care, because I know the speed I travel according to the tach. I didn't like the pillar pod either so that is the reason i put mine where I did. Of course on another note I also have a trans temp, water temp. and oil pressure in the same area.

BH tuning, Transgo shift kit, Eaton posi W/ 3:73 gears, EDGE 9.5" 3000 stall , BMR rear lower control arms. BMR front and rear sway bars Hotchkis springs, CIA trans crossmember; 1.6 Pro magmuim RR; CIA budget headers w/ high flow cats; 2 1/2" cat back with X pipe; chrome dual cone CAI, 52mm throttle body, 30lb SVO injectors, Wilwood brake calipers, Power Stop drilled and slotted brake rotors, Bilstein shocks. Gary's 2 relay headlight harness. Gary's battery relocation harness
