P0336

Guys, I have searched and read and come to the conclusion that this code could be from a "bad" new Opti? Especially when using a NON AC Delco or Delphi part? I ordered one from RockAuto, got the A-1CARDONE part and am experiencing these symptoms. I got the code P0336 after installing it (not my first Opti install) so I simply replaced the CPS. Further investigation (and still having the code) led me to believe that I had installed the Opti wrong. So I removed it and reinstalled it, cleared the code and it came right back on the 2nd run cycle. Live Data says I am at -20* ignition timing....car runs ok, but smells pretty rich. I wasn't getting the code before the swap, so I have to believe that I am experiencing a faulty distributor?

Any and all help is appreciated. TIA!!

I would suspect the Cardone Opti given it was not there before install and you also replaced the CPS (assuming the wiring to CPS is good)

AC Delco or Delphi Optis are really the only ones you should use.I know you can only get reman AC Delco now and the Delphi "new" ones seem extinct

If you have your old opti and it is a AC Delco and worked I would just get a cap & rotor for it and put it back on.

You can return your cardone and try another...they don't have a great reputation but assume some do work

Yep, wiring is good. After I replaced the CPS and the code came back, I checked the wiring. I do have the old Opti, I changed it out because the car hit 100K and I assumed it to be original as well as plugs and wires. It ran horribly whenever it would rain so I decided to go with a new unit.

Wonder if I could/should use the cap/rotor off this one?

Not Sure It's Help But I'm In

I recently bought a 55,XXX FWB that the seller stated he had a shop charge him $1,100 to install a new Opti. I commented that cost was crazy and he said it was "the expensive one ordered from the dealer". I've got 0336 also but it runs EXTREMELY well. I don't have the history to know whether the code prompted the new Opti, or the new Opti caused the code. A new CPS didn't fix it, and the wiring along the oilpan reminds me of a hard sun-baked worm.

I hear the harness is another point of problems so I'll try that first. Then, it's tear down the Opti to check for signs of a fubared install, and then perhaps rebuild an old oem Opti I have from another car.

Back to yours: What I've read from search is the cheap units don't use a Mitsubishi optical. ?????? If that's the case is it possible to swap out the reader ???? Still on the car ???? With your original one ???? Then maybe a new namebrand cap & rotor as BALLSS suggests if cheap Optis use poor versions of those too? Just dumb questions. What is it about your installation that makes you think you did it wrong - twice? Again just dumb question.

EDIT: Crosspost -

Same here on my old FWB. And same here. I think the new wires and plugs at the same time did more than the new Opti though.

Wonder if I could/should use the cap/rotor off this one?
I'll be checking your progress - good luck.

Update: I took the C&R from the new unit, and put it on what I believe to be the original AC Delco unit. 4 run cycles without a CEL. I am still blown away that my brand new Opti was the culprit, but it seems to be fixed.

Thanks for all the help!!

Thanks for closing the loop. Let's hope that uninstalling that '$1,100 New Opti' does the trick on mine too. ;)
