Errors uploading with EEHack and Tunercat

I've downloaded the tune from the PCM of my '94 Caprice wagon, made a few changes to it using TunerPro, and am trying to upload it. I am using an old Windows 7 laptop and a Red Devil River cable.

With both TunerCAT and EEHack, I get an error when either program attempts to erase the PCM so that it can be programmed. I haven't tried starting the car yet (I will in a few minutes) but I'm pretty confident that the PCM isn't bricked. The EEHack stability test passed without issue. And I have used the same cable with FreeScan to view engine data in realtime, so it seems clear that I can read from the PCM fine, it's just writing that's the issue. Any suggestions?

Sorry I just have general comments. Disable screen saver, wifi, windows updates or anything else that runs in the background. Use ctrl alt delete to start task manager then click on show processes from all users. You can right click on tunnerCat or Ehack and set priority high. You can set other things to low priority.

See bad comments on your cable:

Could be windows or the driver for the cable. Do you have the programs running as XP emulations?

I run a XP lap top with everything shut down and have had zero issues with TC. Ehack users report fewer issues when they pull the fuses to the ABS and SIR(air bag)other sub computers for RM and FW.

On a computer I DJ with I kept finding windows trying to update, when I shut down the network driver it tried to use the firewire port. I hate windows for ignoring the do not update choice and other software is worse. Any other activity by the computer is to be avoided during PCM work.

The problem is the piece of **** RDR cable. Stop using it. RDR uses counterfeit FTDI chips and if you make the mistake up updating your FTDI drivers to the latest version, it will screw up the chips. Try to burn a tune with the borked chips and you'll be down a PCM in a hurry. I went through two before I figured it out. It was awesome.

Get a cable with genuine FTDI chips. I got mine from a guy that makes them on eBay. This guy. Ever since, all my issues with eehack and all the other programs disappeared.

I cringe every time a member suggests "get one off ebay and jam the wires in the (car) socket. The vendor you suggested is probably correct that the chip needs more power and different logic levels to program the PCM safely.

The old circuits I have see for the cables used a "buffered stage" between the chip and the car. GM expected this to be "dealer only" and either specified the chip used or used buffer circuits to clean up the signals. Just because the new generation of USB to com chips exist does NOT make them totally backwards compatible with the old serial com chips which may not be compatible with the OBD1 specification. In short I think the vendor mentioned is right about direct connection to the com chips being "flaky".

Is there anything else that I might need to do to get the Red Devil River cable to work? Updated driver? Custom COM port settings?

This is a question you should ask Red Devil River. If they provide tech support and it helps it would be good to know. If they do not help or give you the "have you turned it off, and on?" response that may also give you an idea about the product. I do not expect a company to spend hours helping me sort out a computer, but I do expect them to have a driver available or tell me exactly what and where to get it. Explaining to them that their product is gaining a bad reputation may also push them to help more.

I would love to get a cable that does not work well and see if it is as simple as the wrong voltage(logic) levels. Unfortunately my research points to a communication speed issue that my hobby grade equipment would not show.

As it is not their cable I would not expect much but you could talk with TC. They supplied a driver with their cable.

Is your PCM OK? Hate to ask if it Bricked?

How badly do you want to spend $xxx on another PCM? Because that's the question you're really asking...

My PCM is not bricked, and I do have a good spare.

The driver I had installed was from 2017. I reinstalled the driver that had come on the original Red Devil River CD, which was from 2011, but it returned the same error message.

I've emailed to Red Devil River yesterday but haven't heard back yet.

No reply to my email to Red Devil River three days ago, or my voicemail two days ago. I'm going to order this cable as recommended and see how it goes. Worst case, if it does the same thing as the RDR cable, I can send it back. https://www.ebay.com/itm/273772740746

No reply from Red Devil River after a week. New Ebay-sourced cable from recommended vendor arrived tonight. I hooked it up to my old Windows 7 Dell (pretty much just used for flashing my vehicles) and the cable automatically loaded the FTDI driver from 2017, which is probably the one that I had previously loaded while troubleshooting the RDR cable. So I tried flashing and..

IT WORKED ON THE FIRST TRY!

So, yeah, the RDR cable apparently is junk (it seems to read fine, just not good for writing.. ).
