Okay, this is driving me nuts (no pun intended). I want to replace the lower 'chrome' on the drivers door.

FSM (making it sound sooooo simple) says to remove the three screws (bottom corners and rear top corner) then remove the nut from the front top corner. Push panel up to disengage from top of clips then lower from bottom of clips.

Three screws, no problem. But how the h*** do you get this:

off???? I've tried all sorts of standard and metric sockets, pliers even flat screwdrivers. [img]graemlins/3.gif[/img]

ESFP (Exact Same * Problem) I think maybe the leading side of some Kliens or channelloks or something. I may have merely destructed it since I knew I'd be replacing nearly all the cracked-broke-crapped brackets anyway.

It may have just been as easy as a couple 1/4" extensions and a u-joint or two. I don't 'member.

Can you fish a box-open in from inside underneath with the door partially opened-closed?

On a similar but separate note.

What is the difference between the FW doors and the Caprice/Roadmaster doors?

Are they direct replacements or are they modified for the chrome trim (besides the obvious holes)?

I can get an extension and a ratchet on the darned thing without any problems really. I just can't get a socket to seat on it. I tried several pliers fed upwards with the door open. I can get it over the nut, sorta. But again, can't figure out what size I need to get a snug fit. I can't fit my fingers in there with a wrench to adjust one though. I could try vice-grips but again, not sure there is enough room to maneuver the thing.

HotRod, not sure on the doors, sorry.

When you get that chrome off, could you take a picture of the lower half of the door for me? I'd really like to know what it look like under there.

The front ain't too bad, but the chrome apparently masked a multitude of sins in the area of unfinished design.

Not the best pic HRS but here's a shot after last years spring cleaning.



I can't really recall it being that difficult to get off. I think I just used a 1/4" ratchet, extension and a deep socket.

The bottom edge of the door appears to be different than a Caprice. There looks like a groove on the front door (which curiously isn't there on the rear door).

Just posting here for reference.

Turns out a deep socket is what I needed, so I used an 11mm 6 point deep socket with a couple extensions. Amazingly, it fit!

Five minute job once I got the right tools!
