Sunroof Seal

I have what I believe is the factory model. Strange since I read most aftermarket were able to retain the garage opener, sunglass holder and backseat vanity mirrors. Mine has none of those. I want to replace the seal, but having trouble confirming the manufacturer. There's reference to ASC name in several old threads (most regarding Impala installations), but replacement seals are rather costly so I want to get it right the first try. Any good intel and history here?

I stole these pic from another thread - appears the same as mine:

I did a little looking and found this. There was also mention on several sites about Infala or something similar. https://americansunroof.com/
Maybe you can get the seal your talking about.

Thanks - I had contacted that company earlier today and upon finding I am outside San Diego they immediately referred me to "the headquarters" 800-521-9753 (a Signature Automotive Products).

I got Tech Service at Signature and after describing my unit he referred me to yet another number of a guy he said works by himself and had a run of old ASC seals made and may be able to help.

I called that last referral and spent a good deal of time measuring and describing my unit and the car (type and size of trim, shape and brand of toggle sw.) and he said he'd call me back after the weekend. I'd sure like to add any detail I can by the time I talk with him again.

Update!

The GM Astroroof was NOT an ASC unit, as that name appears to have been the most popular aftermarket unit. You know, the one where you get to KEEP your sunglass holder and rear seat vanity mirrors. The aged codger I spoke with is rather certain the oem was Webasto Starlite 5. You know, the one where there is close to zero available replacement parts. I glued the corner back down that had come loose and had been causing a 'popping' when closing. Some yellow adhesive on another corner indicates a similar problem in the past. The guy says even though original seal is felt, that an as-equal rubber profile is still available.

Any self-respecting sunroof shop probably knows all this in their sleep. There's a specific sequence in the FSM for pulling these intact = smarties can add this to hidden gold when parts picking eh.

More Learning

There are several sites (CarID, Autoanything....) as this one that must use the same GM sourced graphic for their Atroroof part sales:
SUNROOF Parts for 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood

They all show Part #4 as being different for vinyl and vinyl delete cars. And, they likewise ALL show the w/o vinyl is still Available, and the vinyl is NOT.

I spoke with someone at Sunroofdoctor.com and he agreed Cadillac was using Webasto for '96es, but disagreed when I mentioned Starlite V. He said it would have been the Model 5500, which according to their site are both the same size. He was ready to sell me the seal, but I mentioned my glass (including weatherstrip as they measure it) was "very close to the same but slightly smaller" than the site's dims (mine 22 5/8" x 36 1/8"). I asked that since his site shows a 404 Error clicking on the 5500 info, whether there is a difference between seals for vinyl-no and the vinyl as all the parts houses show.

I described my seal as felt, NOT rubber. And it's a simple U with one leg slightly thicker. He checked a box in stock and said his is definitely rubber and NOT a simple U. All of the sudden he recalled a customer with a Fleetwood some many months back who could not physically get the new seal into the opening, and seemed to also remember it being a vinyl car.

So he said he can't help at all. All this merely for background to the next bloke tryna renovate their 20+ year old moonroof. And, maybe advise against getting a car with one in the first place. The wind noise takes 45 points off an otherwise 100 point ride. I'm about ready to pack the gap full of bulb grease or silicone cake and pull the fuse. lol

All this just for searchers - and you know which 2 of you there are. lol

No manner of adjusting has eliminated the wind noise. I covered the shade with Fatt Matt when I re-upholstered it, and that seemed to lower the pitch, but of course only when closed. The gasket (thin felt band glued to the glass frame as described above) has worn down over the years so it'll never give good seal. With a hose I can see water going in, but not normally any leaks. The drips going through a carwash is just too much for the the tubes to carry away hence the overflow over the capture channels.

There's no such thing as replacement gasket for the vinyl roof style Astroroof - ask me how I know yada. And, I found a local sunroof guru shop who knows all the suppliers (including ones I tracked down) and said the 'vinyl roof' seals were hard to find even when the car was new. The wind noise is a major trigger now, so I'm prepping to RTV it closed, pack underneath with house batts and pull the fuse.
