Stepping up the track day safety game for 2016

Time to step it up in the safety department this year!
I'm planning on doing a roll bar/harness bar, 5 or 6 point belts both sides, HANS type device and another fixed back seat for passengers/instructors.

For the half cage/roll bar, I'm planning on doing a welded in version similar to Ander's in his Blackout SS

I have no intentions of racing wheel to wheel, but would like to be safer at HPDE's.
So I'm looking for advice and suggestions on all the above items and have a pretty limited budget, so previously owned and cost-conscious items are welcomed!

I've been happy with my secondhand Corbeau Forza seat, but it does have a steel tube in the headrest right in the middle of my skull, so probably not the safest seat for the limited street driving I do. The seat is also only capable of handling a 5 point harness, but I think that will be sufficient in my old boat. Has anyone used this seat with HANS type devices? Any interference issues?

Attached photo is the current setup.
Let me know what you might have laying around, and please hit me with any suggestions or advice.
THANKS!

Just keep in mind that your car will be relegated strictly to a race car when you install a cage since driving it on the street will be unsafe unless you wear a helmet. Should you wreck it and hit your unprotected head on the bar is like getting hit with a baseball bat.
Just food for thought since you don't need a roll cage until your in the 10s now.
Hans device is a good idea and maybe a real race seat like a Kirkey with sides on it.

Have to agree with Blue bud. You dont want to get so deep in the racing theme, that you make it just as unsafe on the street. As recommended go with a good racing seat that is comfortable and can work on the street as well. Good luck and keep us posted. Hope you guys have a good weekend.

Roll Cage

I have only seen one car go upside down at an HPDE event. That was a kit cobra with big sticky tires that got away from the driver, he tried to save it and flipped it going into Hog Pen at VIR. Street cars with roofs, Impalas, Mustangs, BMW's tend to stay right side up.

Since I still drive my Impala on the street I do not have a roll bar. I bought one years ago and after a trial fit sold it to Gary Foreman. If I was only going to use the car for track days I might install a bar. Hans device is excellent idea and I would spend money on that before a bar, but that's just me.

Allen, what kind of seat and belt setup do you run currently?

I'd personally be fine without a rollbar, but the Watkins Glen day I'd like to do in April is mandatory fixed back seat, 5pt harness, harness bar, and HANS. Ultimate goal is to be able to run a HANS. The Simpson Hybrid with the body straps may work with a 3pt belt, but has not been tested as such.

I've got people telling me I can't do just a harness bar, fixed back seat and a 5pt setup, because IF the car does flip the roof could potentially come down on your head and since you're strapped in tight with the 5pt, your head can't get out of the way, thus pop goes the weasel.

I also have people telling me I can't do a 3pt belt with a fixed back seat, even though it's been going through tech at every HPDE I've ever been to......

Can a heavily padded roll bar be set back behind the seat and tight to the roof enough that in the event of a street driven crash, my head should not hit the bar? Nevermind for a moment that I'd be strapped into a 5pt with no extra neck support.

I'd just like to be as safe as possible while pulling double duty with the car. Realistically, it's driven on the street maybe once a month when it's warm out, and driven to race tracks up to 3 or 4 hours away.

Track Seat and Belts Set up

Corbeau FX1 with Six point belts. The Shoulder Belts run to the rear seat belt anchors. With the FX1 seat and the lap belt tight, you don't have to have the shoulder belts bar tight. Depending on the track I have them just snug or even a little play. I've never failed tech with NASA, SCCA, BMW, SVT Mustang Club. The stock 3-point seat belts are intact and work. The passenger seat is stock. I have had instructors strap in the the 6-point belts and others who preferred the stock belt. You can run a stock 3-point belt with a race seat. As far as hitting the roll bar with you head, I guess it depends on how tall you are.

Cool! Thanks for sharing! Where and how did you anchor the lap and sub belts?

6 Point Belt anchors

I have the Racing seat bolted to the stock power seat rails. The sub-belts anchor through the front power seat legs. Just take the bolts out, slide the anchor in and tighten the bolts.

The lap belts attach through the stock seat belt anchor hole. I replaced the stock bolt with a Grade 8 eye bolt. The eye bolt holds the stock belt retractor and they eye allows me to connect the lap belt for the race belts. I did cut a slit in the back part of the plastic cover to let me flip the lap belts back out of the way when I put the stock seat back in the car.

The idea was to keep all the stock angles and mounting points. To preserve strength and the OEM angles so I wouldn't die in a crash. FWIW, I have had two big offs. One at Gingerman when a lower ball joint broke at the end of the main straight. 100mph straight off track. Second was at VIR at Brake Caliper came loose and I took the long way around the corner.

Both those offs sound pretty frightening! Did the LBJ give you ANY warning before it let loose? Had it seen a lot of heavy use?? You're putting a little fear in me!

Any chance you could snap a few pictures of the lap and sub belt attachment points? I never had power rails, I barely remember what the stock manual rails look like since I've had the custom fixed back solid mounts in the car for years now. I think I have a pretty good picture in my head of your sub setup, but I'd like to compare.

Planning any track events near the east coast this year?
