Impala SS Double Din Modifications Redo

My 94 SS came with a double din kit installed. It has the double din kenwood unit installed up top and the climate controls were relocated under it.

The double din kit is installed, however, was not done very well. I dont think the face plate is sitting perfectly straight and may be sitting incorrectly on whetever it goes on. So I am looking to take out the old kenwood and install a single din bluetooth unit in there...



Anyone done this before ? Do I need to get a new single din kit /.? Can one go back from the double din to single din?
Im not sure if the people who installed the double din in this car had to cut the original bottom dash to put in the kit, and I am curious to know before I start taking it apart, if I need new parts.

Maybe a tad more attention if you can get a Mod to slide this to Audio whatever. Otherwise, the approach most of us use is just break it all taking it apart so you have to get all new stuff anyway, - that you wanted in the first place.

OR,

If all you want to do is go back box stock then do a WTB for the trim plate (or other insides that might show in a FSM) or make a nice parts crawl with friends and/or your kid at the JY.

The OEM radio section of the dash had two distinct openings - HVAC on top, and radio below. (In this picture) You have to cut the OEM faceplate in order to install a double-din head unit which makes one large opening that is then filled by the conversion faceplate. The OEM 'face' of the HVAC/radio section is not removeable - it only looks like it is. Done properly, its a pretty fair bit of finesse and careful use of a grinding wheel to get it to sit correctly. Unfortunately, most installers don't take that sort of time. The only way to truly reverse this to stock is to source an entire left side dash panel - everything from the glovebox to the driver's side door. They're not cheap, and arguably more expensive than a really nice double DIN head unit.

This also assumes that the installer did not cut the sidewalls of the OEM radio cavity in the dash. Unfortunately, 99.999999% of double-DIN installs in these cars have cut into the sidewalls, making a stable, solidly-mounted retreat back into single DIN territory all but impossible. Now, you can get a bracket/mount kit that converts a double DIN to a single and just keep everything mounted as it was. In my opinion, using a single DIN in a double DIN opening would look like ass.

Were it my car, I would carefully pry/cut/otherwise remove the screwed up faceplate and re-do it properly and keep the double DIN.

Depending on who made the kit (I suspect its from "TheDetailSS") you can get a replacement faceplate. The guy behind TheDetailSS is rather slow to respond - the best way is via facebook - but he sent me a replacement faceplate for free when I installed mine because I jacked-up my install by using the wrong paint.

A pretty good detailed accounting, and what I am driving at. The changes needed to do a combo dbl din and flip top-to-bottom are enough to make reverting everything rather entailing. If I take the OP's intent to just replace an old receiver, maybe use the scenario to do a tablet in the same space?
