Interior differences...

So, this may be a wild question I know. But, what is the difference in installation between say a 96 Impala/Caprice dash assembly compared to my 88 Caprice? Heres my brain storm....I need a new dash (at least a new dash pad). I love the cockpit, more modern feel of the Imps. So, is it possible to swap the dash out of a 96? Im planning on a 383 swap, so I know that in order for all of my guages and what not to work would require some finaggling. And, a tranny swap is in the works too, so I could go to the floor mounted shifter at that point. Then id want to do the blazer overhead console as well. Again, this is just a brain storm idea, seeing if its even possible to do at all or if it would be just too much of a headache to tackle. I am NOT a mechanic myself...I just happen to be friends with a lot of mechanics, and I work in a parts department lol. So, this is something Id be paying a buddy in money/beer/pizza to do.

The 94-96 dash is much deeper (front to back) than the earlier models. The reason for the longer dash is the rake of the windshield. The difference is about the depth of the cowl on the 94-96. You would end up moving your seat about 6 inches further to the rear to accommodate the steering wheel placement. There would be numerous other fitiment issues as well. The curvature of the front of the 94-96 would not match the curve of the glass for one.

1991 OCC 461 (.030 over 454) BBC, 3.23 posi, flash to pass, drop spindles & springs, Impala rims, Hydroboost, Recaros, MOMO/wood SW w/QR, custom wood shift knob, Pioneer DEH P77DH
1992 OCC now with 5.7 tbi, DEH P77DH

So. Cant be done. Deal! I imagine it wouldnt be an issue to swap to buckets, with the Imp center console though correct? And, the Blazer overhead console is pretty straightforward as far as I could tell...

The seats will probably fit, but the console may not. You might try a blazer console if the Imp one does not fit.

Yes and no on 2 counts....electrical and mounting to roof/headliner. Not real familiar with the box style impala/caprice but Sounds like Fred has seen his share.

1) electrical - been a while since I installed mine, but if you want items like the compass to work and other stuff, the instructions are pretty specific to our LT1 setup. IIRC 1 wire goes to the PCM and another to something in the VSS circuit. I'd have to look at the instructions again to be sure but they are pretty specific how to hook it up.

2) mounting - on our cars, you need to cut the headliner so that portions of the console tuck up inside the headliner. Does your headliner off the same space? Also do you have the same roof braces to safely install screws to mount it to the roof. I do remember seeing where instead of cutting the headliner, someone chose to grind down the edges of the console to conform to the headliner without cutting the HL. Maybe this would be worth looking into for your car.

'95 Caprice SS conversion - Bonny Buckets - 96 Column, Shifter and Console - 3.73 Gear and Herter tune - Z/28 Cluster - Blazer OH Console - Green/Pink bushings - Chromed Impala Wheels - Eibach Springs and Bilstein Shocks - Corvette Engine Dress - the list goes on and still more to do...it never ends.
