Anyone have success painting their door bezels?

I just recently got some woodgrain bezels for the extreme low price at a yard and stripped them down with acetone. Was wondering if anyone has painted any of their bezels and if so how'd they turn out?

Is it worth just buying fresher ones and calling it a day?

That's what I used but want to mask off some areas and go back over with a DCM. It will be in my interior upgrade thread coming soon. Just needed some confirmation as to the durability.

That sounds like a good idea. I can't wait to see how it turns out, just might force me to do more work to keep up!

ive had great sucess painting interior surfaces with dupli-color high performance spray paint for vinyl & fabric. ive done whole interiors with it. this universal stuff sticks to anything. ive had some plastic pieces painted low gloss black now for about two years and they still look great thats Alot to say considering the interior of a car down here in miami can easily reach 100+ degrees in the summer and stay like that all day.

i did the same thing Hil with a set of woodgrain ones. Clean em and spray em with that vinyl and plastic paint

theese i did with duplicolor (SEM looks better)

That looks GREAT! How did you get the letters back on after you painted them???

I had some great results, I first just scuffed everything with 120 grit, it looked and felt smooth, even after I used the adhesion and primer, when I applied the actual base coat the paint started to sort of wrinkle up, so where it wrinkled, I peeled the paint back and underneath it looked smooth again, as if I didnt scuff it up. I realized theres a plastic film on top, as you can see in the before pic of 305 classic, so I used some 80 grit and really sanded past the clear, and I did the same exact step adhesion, primer, and then basecoat, then clear coat and it came out great.

Ive done it. But im not happy with the output, looked good when I first did it, but its transperent in some spots.

I went with silver (regluar spray paint), and some type of metal flake over.

I taped part of it out, and the taping wasnt all that well.

yup, just the woodgrain. you could do what i did with the gray ones, i don't know how they would look in the end because i noticed the grey ones fade weird. theres also a guy on here that sells the black ones for about $22 a pair, only problem is they don't have the cutout for the window lock.

Hey what was your process before painting the bezels because mines look just like that but trust me when I say my end results were not like that! Mines wrinkled up (the paint) when I sprayed it on there! And on top of that I used gloss black which looks good for the door panels but not the bezel.

wow almost 2 years later, theres really not much prep work. basically cover anything you don't want painted with some sort of painters tape then use a red scuff pad http://www.automotivetouchup.com/sandpaper/scuff-pad.aspx

wich you can pick up at lowes or homedepo and then I used Valspar flat black plastic spray paint and it still looks good today

this was just a test

both of these were painted, the one on the right was the test

Yeah man threads may get old but the concepts always the same. Guys are always trying new things on the bbody. So you didn't sand that shiny coat off the woodgrain?? The scuff pad was enough?? Or was that for cleaning purposes? I only ask because I just sprayed my bezel that was just like that but with gloss vs flat (horrible outcome) and although I sanded it with 180 grit it came out wrinkled in spots:confused: Valspar spray?? Where did you get that, local?? I've been hearing of sem and duplicolor but never valspar. I swore you mentioned you used duplicolor. Sorry for so many questions but you did such a good job. Looks proffesional and its just a bezel.

they are regular impala handles, I wish I just tossed them away and got wood ones from the yard. mine are in pretty bad shape, but anyway.

its not sem paint as most people have done, its regular car paint with 3 coats of clear.

the key to this is to add bulldog adhesive --> bumper primer (flexible primer) before you use car paint and clear on any plastic.

once you have the primer any paint and obviously the clear coat will stick.

Ok I get it now. I was thinking valspar was a spray paint (not primer) and now I get what you mean about how you used sem for the "door panle" and not the bezel. And oh I can see the difference looks really good! Does sem sale gloss and flats?? Because I basically want mines to look factory when I'm done. But I'm using black.

Man you a fool cory black! Lmfao. You be having me over here cracking up off your posts. (A before but no after). Make sure you get them afters up because I'm anxious to see the outcome. Make sure to put what you used and your process/experience! Oh and off topic but you had me cracking up on your exhaust sound clip sayin' that ain't how you sound lmfao!

i'm not hating on this what so ever but this was the reason I didnt go with the gloss because you can see those little dots in the paint and it just bugs me

also to help you out a little if your trying to use SEM the color code for the medium grey is 15393

and for my bezels I used this except I used flat black

are you talking about the dust specs towards the bottom? the right one had been sitting a few days. thats not gloss black silly man its flat black with lots and lots of clear lol. Also not medium grey thats silver

irrelevant but

9c1ss - dont judge me lmao i just trimmed that video im taking that version down.

i used duplicolor filler primer, duplicolor adhesion promoter, and this. basically all these

on the door bezels i used sandable primer when they were blue.

i liked the flat black look that i had but there was nothing to protect itl so i went with a different look
i mean the point of modding isnt to go back the same route lol. ill have the bezels painted this weekend no
wrinkles i promise lol
