Rear view mirror shaking...searched but unclear on this one

my problem is the rear view mirror on my '94 Impala all of a sudden started shaking, even at idle. It's making me  . I didn't bump it or anything, so don't know what the deal is (maybe the rough roads). I found a topic that said there's a screw to tighten it up, but I can't for the life of me find a screw
. How the heck is this rear view mirror held on? Or, how do you remove it from the little bracket that's stuck to the windshield? It's driving me crazy!

Keep me sane guys, Thanks...

there is a screw that tightens it down. i had the same problem when i put my speakers in one day it just fell off.
get either an alan wrench or a star (*) the tip looks like that. i cant recall which.

where the heck does the screw go? I've looked all around the mirror mount and can't even find a spot where a screw may have fallen out. does it go at the very bottom of the bracket or just below where the adjustment part is on the mirror (does that make any sense as I'm not sure how to explain this)? I'm just dumbfounded that I can't figure out where the heck the screw is suppose to be

I just looked at mine and I'll be damned if I know. It looks like (1) maybe the mirror slips over the metal mounting block and is held in place with a spring clip, (2) maybe the rod that the mirror is attached to threads into the mounting block or (3) maybe you have to take the face of the mirror off and there's a screw inside. The reason I thought about the last one is I looked at the mirror from the outside and there's a round metal disc on the back of the mirror that the mount is attached to (or is part of the mount). It looks like there might be a screw that attached the mirror to that plate from the inside.

There is a piece of metal glued to the windshield, the mirror slides down over it, and then a Torx screw goes straight up into the base to push the mirror tightly against the metal bracket on the windshield.

Take the mirror off and hold it in your hand, the entire adjustable arm should be firm and not shakable in relation to the mirror, but some pressure with your hand should move it, when you put it on the metal bracket, it will have some freeplay there until you tighten the screw down, then the free play will be gone.

For the Impala autodimming mirror, there is no screw. Just a clip (that is a BEEATCH to compress!) that holds the mirror onto the metal button.

The shaking means that the mirror is about to fall off the windshield. I'll betcha that if you grab it now, it'll come right off!

Once it falls, get the glue specifically to reattach the mirror button (available from the parts store for a few bucks) and follow the directions EXACTLY!

Been there, done that on this one in my SS (twice!).

AHHHH, SOB! I hate having to use the damn glue. I'm always afraid to adjust the mirror afterwards as I think it's just going to pop off again. I guess I'll do some more investigating tonight after work. Thanks for the help and tips. This is exactly the info I needed

As I remember, you should do it when it's cool so the glue sets up faster.

I popped mine off hitting a monster pot hole one day, took the damn thing right off.

Quick fix, just remember to mark where your old mirror went!

Jeff<<<whose mirror still vibrates anyway.

just an update that I fixed the problem. I didn't have to pop the bracket off the window either. Not exactly sure what the problem was but I took the mirror off and noticed there is a rivoted on piece which is what slides over the bracket. It was loose, so I pounded on it a bit, but didn't really do anything. pushed the mirror back on the bracket and all shaking is gone now
. I think it was coming loose from the bracket that's all. Thanks for the help guys!

I hate to dig up a 2 year old post, but I have tried to compress the clip to stop the bouncing mirror (looks like there is an earthquake behind me). My current thought is to drill and tap a hole in it so I can just add an adjusting screw. Will that work with cast aluminum?

Indeed. But how do you compress it? I've been trying for months to get mine off.

Your 2 15's make my rear view vibrate! :D

I was telling Alex, Damn! Look at my mirror! (When we were at the red light with you behind us!)
