HVAC Blower Motor not breathing.

Blower Motor not blowing at all (96 SS).

Started with 3rd speed deciding to die. Through help on the forum found that the Resistor pack (under passenger side dash, easy access reasonable cost to replace) was most likely the culprit. Due to work commitments and that 1st, 2nd & High still worked was in no rush to replace. Then 2nd and High decided to call it a day. Low still blows just about enough heat to defrost the window, just don't breath heavy on the drive into work.

So got a new Resistor pack and installed. No Joy! Still not working. About to pull the manuals for some fault finding. Fuse is still good (#17). HVAC Control still works fine switching between Defrost, Heat, Vent etc. as does the Manual Heat Control

Any Ideas?

Blower motor itself may have died.
My dead ones would run upside down (motor on top) when I pulled them for trouble shooting, or sometimes when I tapped the casing they turned slowly for a bit.

The HVAC fans do fail, and are not repairable. I have a few good ones for sale at $55 shipped. The aftermarket fans are shorter and allow a substantial amount of higher pressure air to escape to the intake (low pressure side) because it allows a 3/16 inch space between the top of the fan, and the bottom of the intake.

Thanks. Pulled the electrical plug from the motor and I have 12V to it with the car on, temp @ max, Fan @ Max so pwr is getting to the motor but it's not turning. Toast!

Fred, I'll let you know. The ones Canadian Tire have (made by VDO), at least in the online catalogue look the same as the original. Black scroll fan with what appears to be about the same number of blades vice the NAPA, Autozone, AC Delco white fan.


As an aside Canadian Tire is a little bit of Nirvana if your not from around these parts. Automotive, Hunting, Pwr Tools, Camping, Snow Blowers plus Hockey Equipment (and assorted other sports that don't really count.) Plus none of the this Loyalty Points BS. They give you cash when you check out. Canadian Tire cash but cash none the less. Most depending on age probably purchased their first hockey stick or bicycle tire with Cdn Tire Money and most likely a majority people will have at least a couple notes in the Glove Box or in a draw at home. Bought my Drill Press with it. Cashier though wasn't too please with me paying the close to $200,00 in 5 Cent, 10 cent, 25 cent bills

So quick final recap.

If the 3rd position of the fan fails it's your Resistor Block. Easy swap out. Remove or lower the lower panel under the passenger side dash/glove box. 3 tabs. Unplug Resistor Block (easy access) then remove 2 I believe 5.5mm screws.

If your fan fails in all positions. Follow same process as above for access then pull plug from fan. Turn key on, set fan to max (Max bypasses the Resistor block) and measure across plug for 12 V. If you have 12V your fan is toast.

To remove the fan you'll have to remove the lower right hand side panel in the foot well. You may be able to get it out with out removing the plastic trim piece that runs along your door sill though you may risk cracking or splitting that trim. Better to remove the 3 or 4 screws. Don't yank take your time.

To drop the blower fan there are 3 screws (believe 6mm). Can be done while half in and half out of the car on your back with your head in the foot well. Get a good headlamp or light source. Removing the seat would make it very easy to be comfortable but I couldn't be bothered and didn't have the time.

There are no tabs just the 3 screws. Pulling the fan can be a little Rubic's Cube like due to the wire bundles. Take your time. disconnecting some of the wire bundles will make things easier. There was one that really helped. it's a wire bundled contected to the RH Side panel via a black connector with a bolt. Easy to remove and re-connect.

Reverse for install. Again take your time as can be a little frustrating due to the slightly cramped quarters. See that it seats completely as you'll be wondering why the bloody screw won't grab.

Almost forgot, before putting the fan back in check it's operation first. Connect the Plug and with the fan set to low turn the key on (you don't need to start the car). The fan will start to spin (watch your fingers).

When you order the new fan/blowermotor. As you'll find in other posts the current OEM replacement fan available from most Automotive Part Sources will fit but the Scroll Fan is smaller i.e. the cage is not as tall therefore leaving a space between it and the inside the housing meaning the fan will not be as efficient.

Do not believe the Parts Guy at your GM dealer, I qoute "the fan we have is a OEM GM Part that matches what is in the car exactly." Nope. AC Delco.

The orginal fan is a press on fit. Yes it can be removed. Couple wrenches laid flat between the fan and the lower housing and slowing work your way around prying it up and it will come off. That said it will not directly fit onto the AC Delco /aftermarket fan shaft. If I had time I might have made it work e.g. drilling out the top center of the original fan and doing some work on the replacement motor shaft and internal trimming on the underside of the original fan to get it to slide to the right depth. You would have to be fairly exact so you don't get balance issues.

Anyway, I now have heat and defrost. Winter has just become easy.
