AC fine one day, next day reading high pressure?

Hey guys, small backstory. Last year I finally put on another suction/discharge line on my 95 caprice since the control arm rubbed through it(I tied it away this time!) and took it to a shop to drain and recharge. Worked fine all last year and into this year, and by fine I mean after driving for a bit or being on the highway its cold as ice, but stop and go traffic on a hot day and its mediocre, but my drive to work is mainly highway so its enough lol.

Anyway, I was using it one day last week and it was normal, then the next day it wasn't working right at all, even on the highway it wouldn't get cold enough. I remembered I had a basic gauge that comes with a can of refrigerant, so I popped that on the service port of the accumulator and with the AC engaged it was up near 60psi, which according to the gauge is high. I'm asking if this is out of the ordinary, and what would cause a sudden high pressure reading.

I took it to a local shop that I thought did AC work but they don't even have gauges, they just evac/refill and thats it, but they said a sudden high pressure reading could mean the compressor going out, so I also wanted to see if anyone has heard that before.

When I got home I hooked up my basic gauge again and now with the AC on its reading about 45-ish psi, and it got cold just sitting in front of my house, not even moving. And the psi reading with AC off was about 60, although it is a bit cooler today than when I tried using it last week. Both times I used it I had the AC on MAX with the blower fan at full speed.

Just looking for people opinions on whats going on, because I didn't want to spend the $130 on a refill if the compressor is going bad and just waste it. Thanks guys.

Try a shop that specializes in AC repair.

High pressure is often the result of debris clogging the orifice tube. That debris can be metal particles as the compressor degrades. As Fred said you should be talking to someone who knows how to diagnose and repair air conditioning systems.
