Old fashioned flush?

So wanting to flush the Roadmaster before putting in the new HC. The heater hose, the shorter one, was literally blocked with rust/gunk. Is there a gasket you can put in place of the thermostat/gasket combo and simply do an old fashioned flush back and forth from top and bottom radiator hoses? I realize it would also be good to remove the knock sensors at some point
