blank gasket material for leaving out thermostat

So trying to do a flush and just leave the thermostat out, since our thermostat elbow doesn't use a regular paper composite gasket, has anyone just gone and bought some Felpro gasket paper and cut out a template to use while doing an engine flush? It should work...? I think removing the knock sensors might be good to do as well. Do you have to add more thread compound to the knock sensors after you remove them?

'95 DGM Impala SS, 383, LT4 cnc heads, LT4 matched intake, Holley 58 mm t/body, GM 846 cam, GMPP 1.5 rr's, F-body MAF, BH OBD I PCM, LT4 knock module, K&N cold air, Edelbrock headers, Flowmaster exhaust, BBHP #73 6-speed, 4:10 gear, sloted and drilled rotors, Z28 cluster.

'96 Buick Roadmaster Limited Wagon, mostly stock.

74 Ford F100, 390 HP pulled out of a 67 Fairlane GT

91 Mustang LX notchback, 5.0L, 63,000 miles, pristine.

can you just slip the rubber gasket off stat & use that?

been forever since I put the stat in so can't remember but IIRC it comes off...

I kinda thought about that, but the thermostat actually gives it the supporting structure (IIRC) to seal against sides and top of the elbow. Without it, it may not seal. Maybe.

I would think you could just use some gasket material in there if what you're planning on doing is just to use this to Flush the system somehow. You could also get by with a bead of RTV, let it setup and then clamp it down. I would think. Either would prevent leaks for some low pressure flushing. The rubber seal has a notch on the inside circumference that slips over the metal housing of the Tstat. There is no structure at all to the rubber gasket so it's pretty flimsy. IIRC there is a groove in the WP housing this sits in, but it could collapse inward or not seal at all without the Tstat.


As for the knock sensors, they have a Red-Ish colored sealant already on the threads. I've never used anything extra on these and being a NPT fittings they seal pretty well when re-using them. You don't want to use anything extra like Teflon tape as that can affect the sensitivity of the KS itself...at least what I've read on that.

There are "flow restrictors" used in place of thermostats in some drag racing applications. Same outer diameter,and various inner diameters. Made of thin metal (like a large flat washer) that would also accept the factory style gasket/seal...

Considering the recess lip I'm having trouble seeing what's wrong with just nestling the gasket in there without the T-stat and snugging down on the gooseneck a few pounds. Can't fathom a problem (or leak) if just doing a static hose flush. Even if starting the engine a bit to circulate things the only direction from pressure on the rubber will be "outward" against that recess lip. Certainly little fear of it getting sucked into the intake.

It doesn't sound like you're thinking of driving around where giant leaking is a concern.

Save your $. Cardboard and grease will make a fine seal for an hour if all you're doing is a simple flush.

That could be a good option for you if this is something you really want to do.

Along the same idea, just pickup a Washer at Home Depot that is basically the same diameter and thickness as the TStat body and install the rubber seal on it.

You could also just Butcher up the old Tstat and remove the inards of it keeping just the Body of the Tstat. I would suspect if you're flushing the system that you would also be installing a new Tstat anyway.
