heater core 'extra part' question?

OK, in buttoning everything back up for my 96 Buick Roadmaster heater core, which works nicely now, I found this eight sided steel 'spacer' with a simple hole in the middle (no threads). I'm thinking it could be a spacer for the underdash steel brace that supports the lower dash to the firewall. See the pictures. The last two are with the brace over the 'spacer'. There's a bit of rust on one side of the spacer, and on that same side there's a traceout of what appears to be same shape as the brace end.

Any of you that have done this recently recognize this part? Does it go anywhere familiar?
